Psych Eval charge :(

I received a bill today from the weight loss center I am going to for all of my pre-op testing and surgery, for $478.00. I already had to pay a $40.00 charge to expediate it so it would not hold up my surgery date. NO ONE ever told me that I would not be covered under my insurance.
Has anyone else had this sort of thing happen to them?

Insurance quite often does not cover psych evals or nutritionist appointments.  I had to pay in cash up front for those things.

It's much better then paying the $15,000 hospital bill though.

You are so right! In my case, the insurance paid half of my nutrition and psycg evaluations, but then denied me the surgery! :-(

I agree w/ Kevin. I only paid less than $500 for my eval and everything else was covered for my surgery, hosp stay, all medical consults and tests, paying a couple hundred dollars is better than paying thousands

I paid $8,000 for my surgery.  I would have gladly paid $478.

$14,500 plus around another $800 in tests. LOL.

Seriously, if they didn't tell you, you need to call them to see if the bill was a mistake and if it wasn't, then workout a payment plan if you need it.

call them I tell them to put you on a payment plan to pay about $25.00 per month.  That way the bill will not go to collections.

I had to pay the 20% because they billed it through the hospital and not as a doctors office.  I checked wit several independent  psychiatrist listed on the BCBS website and most of them billed through a hospital or did not to bariatric evals or wanted $500 to complete the paperwork.  I ended up going though the hospital so I could at least use a billing plan and not have to pay the entire $937.00 up front and the counselors fee was higher than the psychiatrists' fee.

I have 9 days til surgery and after the last 6months of bills for pre op, I am on pins and needles waiting for the actual Insurance Approval.
This journey sure can bruise your bank account ( I know it's worth it)

My nutritionist was covered but I had to pay 250 out of pocket for my psych eval. My surgery is set for Thursday the 13th and I just found out Friday that my portion out of pocket will be 3k. She also dropped the bomb that I had to come up with half of it as a "down payment" by tomorrow. Thank god for 401k loans or this dream would be over! Things have a way of working out so hopefully they will for you. =)

My psych eval was $525. My nutrition class was $177. I also had to get pulmonology clearance with pulm function test and chest xray $400+, and I had an upper GI $89. Add 2 preop visits to the surgeon($383) and I still have $5000 to pay out of pocket for actual surgery for dr and hospital. I think that is usual and customary as they used to say. I have insurance and work for a hospital system.
