Not losing on the pre-op diet

What is wrong with me!?  My pre-op diet started 9 days ago and I've only lost about 2 pounds.  It consists of: 2 meal replacement shakes, 1 light yogurt or fat-free cottage cheese, 4 oz lean protein and large salad (with no starchy veggies.)  Occasional snacks are: piece of fruit or sugar-free popsicle.

I have cheated once: 5-6 wheat crackers with peanut butter last weekend.  But, other than that I've been very good!  I'm frustrated that I'm stalling NOW, before I even have surgery.  I'm scheduled for surgery 10/31.

What's going on?  Everyone else talks about losing 10-15 pounds in these two weeks and I'm the failure.

That is odd...  Let's see if we can find anything hidden in your meal plan.  What is the calorie/carb count on your meal replacement shakes?  What kind of meats are you eating as lean protein?  Are you using any dressing on your salad?  How many pieces of fruit are you having per day?  Hidden fats/carbs could be stalling your weight loss.

Thanks!  I do think there's some bad stuff in these shakes.  I hate them!  But, we were given a list we had to choose from, so I chose the best options I could.

Carnation (no sugar added) - 150 calories, 50 from fat, 16g carbs

Boost-190 calories, 60 from fat, 16g carbs

I usually have one piece of fruit, not everyday though.  And it's an apple or pear.  Of course, there are also carbs in the yogurts and cottage cheese.  I use the spray balsamic dressing, that's what the nutritionist said to use.  I do 10 sprays and that's supposed to be 10 calories.

Are you drinking water like a fish?  Or tea or other watery drinks? That should shift the weight if it is stubbornly hanging on because of sodium.

You are not a failure!!!  Everyone loses at a different rate.  And you are only on your pre-op diet.  That is not going to dictate how you do after you are sleeved.  The purpose of the pre-op diet isn't necessarily to get you to lose weight, but to shrink your liver so that it is easier and safer to maneuver around it.

Just keep up the good work.  10/31 is only a few days away!!!  You're gonna do great!!!

You guys are so awesome!

I'm probably not drinking as much as I should, but have been guzzling water the last few days because I'm coming down with a cold (hoping I can shake it soon so I don't have to postpone surgery!)

Maybe the increased fluids will help me lose some more.

Hmmm...  Maybe your pre-op meal plan is more generous than most?  Some folks are on liquids only.  My plan was similar to yours except I could only have 3 oz lean protein, my shakes were limited to under 160 calories, and no fruit was allowed.  Be patient -- you will drop!  It's just hard comparing yourself against others that may have been on a more restrictive regimen.  You sound like you are doing well, though -- a lot of folks are climbing the walls at 9 days.  Give yourself an A for endurance.  This is the hardest phase...

Thanks!  :)  I'll keep on!  Only 5 more til surgery (assuming I shake this cold).

I would suggest drinking more water for sure, help flush that fat out of your system.

I don't know what your medical issues may or may not be, but I can tell you, my best friend has PCOS.  She didn't do a preop diet, but even after her RNY surgery, it took her a few weeks to really start loosing.  The docs said it was her body catching up to her hormones.

Every body is different.  I wouldn't worry at all.  Once it starts falling off....hold on tight, it will go fast.

Hi,

Don't get discouraged. It will come off.

Depending on your diabetes meds - these can definitely cause you to not lose weight. When my husband was diagnosed and went on his meds, he gained about 15 lbs!

I'm scheduled for 10/30! Good luck to you!
