I had VSG in January and Aunt Flow has been visiting me NEARLY EVERY DAY since.  There are days where the flow will be super heavy, then light and one day in between where it is gone but it comes back the next day heavy again.  Initially my surgeon and my OB/GYN both said it's normal because of the hormonal imbalance my weight loss was causing.  Now that I'm 9 months out, they are getting concerned.  I've gone for bloodwork this morning and have a pelvic ultrasound scheduled for Monday.  (My bloodwork came back great at my 6 month appointment but they suspect I might be anemic because of my blood loss now.) The folks at CVS know me since I'm in there buying pads every other damn week.

I'm just curious if any vets out there have had a similar issue and how did you resolve it?!!

Danielle

Are you on birth control? Typically that is offered to help regulate cycles. I had my period for about 10 weeks after surgery but then it regulated itself (i was on nuvaring). Then after about 50lbs of weight gone I started to have my period on my own days before I took the ring out.

Perhaps an IUD? I hear a lot of woman don't have periods with that. I am not sure if i have heard about this situation in a vsg patient this far out.

Best of luck to you!

I currently have Implanon which is Progesterone only.  I did have Mirena prior to surgery but ended up getting pregnant with it.  Before surgery my cycle was fairly regular with the Implanon so I'm no sure if I just need different BC or not.

Hi Danielle,

Hormones are stored in fat so serious weight loss causes a flood of hormones to be released. Lots of people have menstrual irregularities after surgery, but I have not heard of problems lasting this long. (My cycle was messed up for 3-4 months.) I am glad you are getting things checked out. Here's hoping it is just a sign of your excellent weight loss. I am sure it is very frustrating right now.

all the best, Katy

consult weight 241 (had not been accurately weighed for over 10 years, my medical records just said "wheelchair") high weight was probably closer to 260.

It's funny how we're all different.  I'm nearly 6 months out.  Aunt Flo paid me a short visit 2 weeks after surgery and hasn't made an appearance since.  NOT COMPLAINING!!!! mail

Oh girl! I have been there and I feel your pain! Be sure you are taking your iron supplements because it is really easy to get anemic in this situation. Your doctors will likely find that there's nothing physically wrong with you and put you on a high dose of birth control to stop the bleeding. They may or may not put you on continued BC after that. ASK FOR IT. Otherwise your flow may start up again. I've had this happen to me several times over the last few years that I've been at my heaviest. I told myself that if it happened again I am going to insist on the BC patch so that I don't have to rely on myself to remember a pill!

good luck hon. I hope things even out SOON. I know this is a serious inconvenience and a pain in the rear.
