Protein Shakes

The main reason for protein shakes at this point is to find one(s) that you like (or at least tolerate) since they will be one of your staples post-op.You can also experiment with other forms for whatever different phases that you may go through (unflavored or chicken broth flavor into soups or mashed potatoes, chocolate or vanilla flavored into SF puddings, etc.) They're no more likely to cause weight gain than anything else that would be excess to your caloric needs, so as an occasional experimental meal replacement they will be just fine (and hopefully your doc doesn't go overboard with them pre-op as some do!) but your emphasis at this point, as your NUT's plan suggests, is to establish some good long term eating habits with real foods.

A word of caution is that your tastes may change post-op, or they might not - so don't go overboard on stocking up on any that you find that you like.

^^Ditto. I made the mistake of stocking up pre op and have over $100 in powders shoved into the back of my cabinet that I can't use because I became lactose intolerant post op. And I also threw away a TON of RTD shakes that I'd stocked up on in those first couple of weeks, then BOOM. They were suddenly disgusting.

Protein shakes are for temporary meal replacement.  Stick to the NUT's plan and eat natural.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I am going to look into getting some samples to try them out and see what I like for after I have the surgery. May start drinking one in the morning for breakfast.

My nutritionist's plan for me actually does include a protein shake a day instead of lunch.  (You should stick to your nutritionist's plan, of course, I'm just sharing what mine says.)

I decided not to try any protein shakes before surgery because a lot of people say that their taste changes and I didn't want to be affected by that.

I use protein shakes, pre-surgery, as a meal replacement.  I find some mornings I just am not hungry since starting to eat more protein and the shake goes down easier.  Other mornings I eat greek yogurt or cottage cheese.  I think if you use them as a meal replacement and not a supplement it is fine.  Ultimately real food is always better.
