What is the Best Pre-op & Post-op Vitamins
According to the ASMBS, we need a multi that gives us 100% of most vitamins and minerals. There are 28 of those. Some aren't really necessary to get in your multi, in my opinion - like sodium, fluoride, iron, B-12, and calcium - since we tend to supplement those individually.
Flinstones are missing 9+ of the recommended daily vitamins and minerals, so you should avoid those. Many vitamins for kids are missing important things like selenium. Many other gummies/chews that aren't specifically made for bariatric patients fall into the same trap and are missing a lot of what we need. Read carefully.
I started off taking Bariatric Advantage's multivitamin at the recommendation of my nutritionist. It seems to be doing right by me since my recent lab work is great. However my copper is high, so I'll be switching to something else. (Sadly, lots of surgeons/nutritionist recommend things that are not ideal, so it's not always safe to follow what your doctor recommends. Do your own research.)
The short version, though, is do your research - read labels carefully.

Easy answer? Call YOUR doc and see what he/she recommends! :)
I take a generic "comprehensive adult multi," plus calcium chews, B12 lozenge, and carbonyl iron. I added the latter 2 after having blood work done (you'll usually have it done for followup appointments) when my surgeon said things were looking OK but if I was feeling tired I should bump up my B and iron levels. Labs are your friend!

I take a double dose of Trader Joe's High Potency Multi chewables (one with breakfast, one with dinner), Wellesse liquid iron and liquid calcium. The multi from Trader Joe's is less than half the price of the bariatric specialty brand recommended by my surgeon (conveniently sold by his office) and my labs have always been great, so I see no need to change. Oh and the Trader Joe's is also lower in calories and carbs than a lot of other chewable or gummy vitamins.
The only thing my doc/nut said was 'no gummy vitamins.' Not sure why. I'm taking Flintstones, but we'll see - I hate being pushed into a brand by my doctor's office (to be fair, they don't really pu**** - I'm just very aware that some do).
SLEEVED 21 May 14 with Dr. B. Greene. Max weight 470 lifetime; 395 pre-op; goal weight 190. Current weight 217; 178 lost so far, 27 to go and keep off.
Flinstones chewables are lacking 10 of the recommended vitamins and minerals, so I hope those aren't the ones you're taking!
