Not enough Protein?
I am 1 week post op and I am just noticing on my paperwork that it says I should be getting 3 high protein supplements a day. I am getting 42 grams of protein per 12 oz shake so I have been drinking 2 shakes per day. I just added some cottage cheese and some pudding yesterday but otherwise I am just drinking water. Am I getting in enough protein if I don't split them up?
TIA
That's at least 84 grams of protein, so I'd say you're good. I would call and get a gram recommendation, though, just to be safe!

You could always split your shakes up into 3 for 8 ounce servings if you're worried.

Only one thing that you might want to check carefully is the sodium count on each shake. My favorite so far our Lean Body by Labrada Laboratories, if I drank three of those a day, I'd be consuming about 1500mg of sodium. The FDA recommends no more than 1500 per day. I guess it's the sodium that makes them taste so good.
sorry to tell you but your body can only absorb 30 gm of protein at a time so you are wasting 10 gms of those shakes , you need to split them up into more snacks
you can add unflavered protein powder to the pudding , soon you will be on whole foods and will be able to eat chicken and fish
does your plan allow you to eat eggs now?eggs are your friend I eat 2 eggs with smoked salmon (27 gm protein ) 3-4 times a week , I have been doing this since week 2 when my plan called for all foods
it is harder at first when limited to full liquids and soft foods but give it a few weeks and it will get easier
I wish you would stop sharing this myth about "only 30 grams of protein." Even the ASMBS agrees there is no proof.
This is from the "ASMBS Allied Health Nutritional Guidelines for the Surgical Weight
Loss Patient" (see link to article below and look on page S95): "One popular myth is that only 30 g/hr of protein can be absorbed. Although this is commonly found in both lay and some professional literature, there is no scientific basis for this claim. It is possible that, from a volume standpoint, patients might only realistically consume 30 g/meal of protein during the first year."

Thank you for posting this link, GwenMo! I see this mentioned on the boards from time to time, and I always wonder about the validity of it. This information is super-helpful. :)
You're welcome. I have scoured the internet trying to find studies to support the claim, but all I've found is studies to the contrary. It frustrates me to no end how many people spout nutritional myth and urban legend just because it's what their health team told them. (And I'm certainly not above that - in the end we all have to make our own choices. But I like my choices to be based on facts, not myths.)
