Hi there!  After RnY surgery, is it ok to take iron with whey protein drink?  I know it is not supposed to be taken with calcium or caffeine, not to mention most other foods.  But I am making my vitamin plan for post-op and am wondering if I can take it in the morning with my whey protein at breakfast.  What do you think?

Whey is made from milk so the drink may have enough protein to inhibit the absorption of your iron. It depends on the drink.

Generally you want to be taking less than about 280 mg of calcium with your iron, preferably 0 mg.

I had to shift my schedule to get the iron in unopposed to calcium and I ended up taking the iron mid-afternoon with diet cranberry juice and a little trail mix. Good for you for getting your schedule in order.

So do you take all your iron at one time?  My tummy doesn't like it.

I think any iron is pretty tough for RNYrs' and some DSrs' systems. I'm able to take the 2 servings about 20 minutes apart but can take them all at one sitting if I have to. I think you have to take them slowly with a piece of fruit, and don't lie down after you take them. Some folks are taking Colace and/or magnesium oxide to counteract the constipation iron and calcium cause too. It's all about experimenting until you find the best way to handle it. Of course, it sure would be nice if iron infusions were more common and created less issues for folks.

many people have taken it with protein for years with good success. but you'd still take it with vit C and of course, said protein has no milk in it, right?

And i'd still suggest eating some fruit before you take it

yes, sorta. some ppl with dairy allergies (as in phlegmy, sniffly) can do whey.

Whey is to milk as exhaust fumes are to crude oil. Many processes have happened. Most are lactose free or close. Some add lactose back in.

So, while it doesn't make sense to me, either. Many have taken their iron with protein for years and have ferritins up toward 400, irons around 90. Must work, right? I take protein shortly before or after my iron, but I take it WITH fruit
