The dreaded BM questions

This is so true.  When I had my surgery in 2001 I thought I could eat whatever I wanted and I payed.  I really had no clue.  I am glad that things are different now.  I don't know that it would have made much of a difference for me, though.  My problems was that my shorter common channel seemed to cause a tendency for SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).  I did find relief when I took Flagyl but my doctor didn't want to prescribe it for me.  I did buy it online but I was afraid of becoming antibiotic resistant.  Even when I went low carb and eliminated all refined carbs I would have problems if I didn't take the Flagyl.
From the first day of my revision the problem cleared up but now I have the opposite problem.  If I don't take magnesium oxide, Miralax and fiber I get terribly constipated.  I was always very prone to constipation even before WLS so it's to be expected.  I also have a rectocele which makes the constipation much worse and I need to keep things moving or I am miserable.

I have RNY  and have absolutely  no problems whatsoever in this department .  I WAS afraid of socially unacceptable flatulence  etc ... as a side effect of  WLS but that hasnt happened and i eat an obscene amount o f high fiber veggies and beans  and gas producing broccoli lol.

I love my probiotics though .

That said if I  had the choice  Id opt for a DS hands down .  I just see too much regain with  RNY  s .

I have a feeling  ten years from now I'll  probabbly be revising to a DS myself .

As an RNY'er my BM's have been erratic, at best.  In the beginning it was very fluid and you had to go "now".  That was for a few weeks after surgery.  Now as I'm approaching my 3rd year, and even 1-2, I tend to get "plugged up" if I don't be mindful of what I'm eating/doing.  Since my diet is pretty much high protein/low carb, I do get bound up if I'm not careful.  Probiotics have been my friend and many on here take benefiber as a daily supplement.  I find I have "good days and bad days".  Sometimes a couple a day (and able to wait as before surgery), and some days its none... then I know I'm paying and definitely doing something wrong.

I think you'll find people may process foods differently.  I think it also depends on how you are with your fluids, I'm poor at it.  And, I'll be honest with you, I find protein and calcium bind me up.  When I miss them, I'm not as bad as when I have them.

You eat a WHOLE 26oz prime rib from Boones???    That will definitely change.  I'm at about 6 oz now...  Get used to splitting meals with your wife.  That's another benefit of the surgery - you can save money eating out!!

Thank you for sharing all your personal information. It sure is an eye opening experience and I never expected the number of responses I got which really shows how much everyone wants to help everyone out :-)

Im not going to base my surgery type on BM's of couse but knowledge is power and with my type of job it sure helps to know what the best and worst cases are.

Thank you again
