Mr Mac had diabetes
I suspected that is what you would say and unfortunately unless HE wants real control, he'll have to go beyond the doctor...but many can't. I actually fired a doctor cause he would not write the amount of test strips I needed to test how I wanted...HE wanted me to only test 2 x a day and I was testing 8-12 times a day. So I fired him and found a much more "educatable" doctor.
I remembered a couple of other sources that may help both of you 1) a book by Gretchen Becker (she is on that yahoo list) called "The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes; An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed". and the second is "What on Earth Can I Eat?, Food, Type 2 Diabetes and YOU", by Alan Shanley (also on the same yahoo list). There is also David Mendosa's web site. Btw, he is also on the same yahoo list. :)
Good luck

He told me but I forgot. I think he said 6.8.
That's only slightly above normal, what some doctors call pre-diabetes. But there really isn't any such thing as "pre" diabetes. When doctors give you that diagnosis, what they mean is "your blood sugars aren't normal but I'm not willing to put you on meds yet."
I'm glad his doctor is calling it diabetes because that's what it is.

I'm sorry to hear this! Keep trying to get him moving...would he consider using a food journal? Maybe if he sees the numbers each day it would help motivate him??
My husband is in the same "triad"... he just doesn't want to do anything about it and goes out to avoid the good food I bring into the house. He ate $100 worth of crap over the past two weeks --- talk about a hot mama!
I keep thinking mine will hit rock bottom --- and he never does. Very frustrating, to say the least.
I am continuing to cook healthy foods and doing my thing and hope he will take charge of his life.
Hang in there!

Marie, I'm so sorry to hear this about Mr. Mac. It's impossible to motivate another person, as we all know from our own pre-op days, but maybe this will give him the kick in the pants to do something differently. It would be great if you could convince him to come to some of our contra costa luncheons. Maybe being around others that have been so helped by surgery might make a difference.

You have good advice for all of us, I wish I had something for you. I lived with my weight for 25 years because I didn't have any real health issue. Then I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
I decided that was the wake up call. I was on metformin and went "carb-less" for about three months. Watched every bite. Protein and some veggies was all. I lost about 8 pounds, then hit a wall, no more loss, no improvement of blood sugar numbers. I am a reader, so I checked out any book about diabetes I could find. One is called Diabetes Rising, by Dan Hurley, 2010. It has chapters about all the research being done. When I read about WLS as a treatment, I started getting serious about getting surgery. My numbers which didn't budge on metformin, were normal in the hospital before I was fully awake from the anesthesia.
My surgeon says people opt for surgery when the risk of staying obese is more that the risk of surgery. I couldn't deal with my fear of heart disease and a slow painful death from diabetes, so I focused on my best alternative. You are one of my role models, especially since you are an athlete now. If your example doesn't work, I don't know what could motivate your husband. I am so sorry you are dealing with this.

My husband has high cholestrol...sleep apnea...and obesity as well....he is stressed out from work...has no time to himself and is depressed....yeah...i hear ya Mac.....he has been warned about diabetes and he's trying to get it together but I think he is really stuck...it's terrible...once the diagnosis comes in it 's not going away...he would NEVER consider surgery....he doesn't drink...smoke..etc...food is his only comfort....I understand and he is hooked on it like I was pre-surgery...and still struggle with....I don't know the answer....I think men are most afraid of heart attack...most guys when that happens get some weight loss going but until that hits them on the head they're denial system is pretty strong....you are not alone in this..take it one step at a time...

So I told Mr. Mac about testing more often and he got snippy with me. Ha, I knew that would happen.
