He's got me on a very low dose water pill.  Which seems to be working, so we didn't address that problem today.  I'll see what he says in 2 months!  Maybe if my numbers come up, the edema will go away!  I'm hoping!!   Not sure what causes edema, I thought it was because of the hormones in the NuvaRing.  That is when it started and got Really bad!  But I've been off the NuvaRing for 3 1/2 weeks.  So I thought the hormones would be out of my system by now!  The next post mentions protein, so I'll have to look into that!  Thanks Panda!

I don't remember off the top of my head!  I want to fill in my spreadsheet and get with Gina tomorrow.  I'll take a look at it then and get back to you!

Will low protein cause Edema?  I'm unsure what causes it.  I just posted back to Panda, I thought it was from the NuvaRing hormones.  That is when it started and got bad!  But I've been off the NuvaRing for 3 1/2 weeks, so I figure the hormones are out of my body.  Edema is still there a bit!  But he's got me on a Low dose water pill that seems to be working well.  So, I'll check on it in 2 months when I go back!

Protein

Protein attracts water and plays an important role in water balance. In cases of severe protein deficiency, the blood may not contain enough protein to attract water from the tissue spaces back into the capillaries. This is why pictures of starving people often show an enlarged abdomen. The abdomen is swollen with edema or water retention caused by the lack of protein in their diet.

When the capillary walls are over-permeable (too leaky), protein can leak out of the blood and settle in the tissue spaces. It will then act like a magnet for water, continuously attracting more water from the blood to accumulate in the tissue spaces.[7]

Very interesting!!!  My New Years Resolution is to drink more water.  Because I know I don't drink enough!  But this makes sense, I NOTICE that I need more water.  Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but it sounds like with low protein, its going to suck the water out of you!  I'm going to take a look at those labs before I go to bed here in a few minutes!!  Thank you so much!!  I learned something today!!

Not drinking enough fluids will also cause water retention.  The body will hold onto the water it has to make up for the water it's not getting.

Low protein doesn't "suck" the protein out of you. The cell membranes become leaky and the protein moves out of the cells, which causes the edema.

Interesting.  I have had edema for months and talked to the Dr last time I was in.  she said to get different sock, LOL.  She wasn't in the least concerned.  I have started taking some herbal water pills since my trip to get my swelling down and they seem to be working.  I get usually over 130g of protein a day and usually around 100oz of fluid so I don't think it is lack of protein or fluid.  She thought it was related to having lost weight and having more vessels than now needed????? if I understood her correctly.  I know that the cause these days is my bad knee, at least on that leg but the other leg has some too.

Maybe, it is inflammation? What is your sodium intake? Too much sodium can cause swelling/edema. Does your other knee have any arthritis?
