What do you think?

I am going to Dubai in April!  Yay!  I am so excited.  I've been all over the world but never to the middle east.  I asked my dr about the food there.  Surprisingly, he said for me to enjoy what I can, even the rice dishes, because I may not ever get that chance again.  He said to just be reasonable and have very small portions.  I told him that they serve sweet coffee and dates to guests and I don't want to be rude.  He said I should try something sweet before I leave to see if I am a dumper.  He said dumping won't kill me, but I may wi**** would for an hour or two!  He said it was probably better to find out when he and my PCP were close by then in the middle east so far from home.  What should I try?  What should I expect?  I am terrified of this dumping syndrome!

I didn't dump early out but if I eat too much sugar now, I have a mini dump.  Remember, only about 30% dump.  I would just go slow, no matter what you try.  You may want to try rice before because some folks do have problems with that.  And maybe the dates since they are pretty condensed sugar.  Otherwise, eat very slowly so you can stop if you start feeling odd.  My mini dumps feel like my heart is pounding outside my body and I can feel every heartbeat in every ounce of me.  I get a little sick feeling, tummy wise but mostly it is the heart beat thing.  Others *****ally dump will have other feelings I imagine.

Sounds like a great trip.  Hope you have a good time.

Like Price said, if you plan on eating rice, I would try it before you go also.  I have a hard time with some pasta, it just feels like it is multiplying in my stomach and really hurts.  The only problem with having this is that carbs are really hard to kick once you start eating them.  Sometimes carbs will just knock me out for about 15-20 minutes-best sleep ever!!

Sugar is the same way when you find out you don't dump.  I can eat some, but if I pu**** - I feel terrible.  If you want to try something before you go, maybe try a very small piece of cake with icing - this would have the sugar and the carbs.  When you are there, jus****ch your portions and be sure to eat really slow that should help with not getting sick.

Why risk ruining your trip with dumping?  Try the rice at home and see how it works for you.  As far as sweets, leave them alone. Learn the Arabic word for diabetic.  Murmur it and smile sweetly when offered dates.  My son was a Fulbright Scholar for a year in Dubai.  He did not feel the need to eat things that would adversely effect his health, just to be social.  They're just people like us.

Have a great trip and enjoy everything!

I like the diabetic response.  That's a good one and I will use it.  My dad was in the military and we have travelled quite a lot.  The one thing I learned very early in life is that people do get offended if you turn down there offerings of food.  I think the white lie of being diabetic is the perfect out.  I wish I learned that a few years back!  I am really more concerned with hidden sugars like in sauces etc than in obvious ones like desserts and dates.  As it is now, I rarely eat out in public.  I get everything to go and eat at home.  I'm worried about both dumping and throwing up.  I'm still getting used to what my pouch tolerates.  Example:  medium done steak is not good  But medium rare to rare is.  It's a learning curve.

I hope you have a great time!

I can understand your Surgeons reasoning for telling you to try things and having his permission probably makes it seem ok, but I don't use vacation, weddings, holidays, etc. as an excuse for eating things that I shouldn't.

I still dump on sweets and fats so I rarely eat those things when I'm out because it can ruin your day.  My heart pounds, I sweat terribly, get extremely tired and have to lay down.   One day I might dump and the next day I won't so trying it at home (which is a slippery slope) doesn't gaurantee you won't dump on that paticular food another time.

Doctor has given you a license to try out sugar. Hmmm.... This should be interesting.

Try something that's worth it if you dump!

He suggested trying some sugar once.  He is not advocating it as a lifestyle choice.  He is staunchly anti-carbohydrate which is why the whole conversation caught me off guard.  Maybe he just doesn't want a phone call at 2 am in Arabic from some ER Dr in Dubai whose trying to convince me I'm not going to die.   I was thinking a glass of apple juice, but I'm too afraid anyway.

They think I'm weird here in Nicaragua for not have sugar in my coffee, but when I am out I ask for Sugar-Light, so it's splenda or the like and they are okay with that.
The ladies who cook for me here have seen pictures of the fat me and they know I have worked hard to lose the weight. I also translated a sentence to say, "I eat food separate from drinking because it is better for my stomach."
Think of what would be best to have as a phrase or two that would help you, to have printed out.
You are at the beginning of the journey I am surprised they said okay to sugar even to try.
The diabetic thing works all over the world too.

Have a great trip. That's somewhere else I would love to go.
