spring garden

Today was beautiful, after the rain stopped.  So I decided to take advantage of all this warm and sun and get the early garden in the ground.  I bought sets and planted brocalli, lettuce and spinach.  It's exciting to think that spring is really here and in a few weeks I'll have salads from my own garden right in my own yard.  Who else is gardening this spring and summer?

I'll have to wait until the farmers market opens. If I plant anything in patio pots the squirrels get to them. Rabbits are an issue too...I think there's an entire community of them living under our neighbor's deck...oh, and the deer come up from the park and eat everything that isn't nailed down. :(

Our squirrels are just after the bird feeders so they leave the garden alone.  The deer have plenty and they are usually after the apples instead.  We have tons of rabbits but they don'e seem to mess with the raised (22" raised) beds.

I'm planing in raised beds that were filled with compost and covered with black plastic to bake over the winter so they were dry.  I don't think we have been quite as wet as you were either.

Here In Utah we don't dare put anything in the ground until Mothers Day.  Two years ago we had several inches of snow and ice in mid May so even that isn't always safe.  I used to live in MD in the DC suburbs and March/April were my gardening months.  We have been here 4yrs now and I must be acclimated.  I haven't even got Spring fever yet!

Tonya - it was like that in Northern MI too, except its Memorial Day.  It was SO hard NOT to buy stuff when you saw it in the stores.  Not even hanging baskets unless you wanted to take them in the garage or have them protected somehow...

I certainly can't plant any frost sensative stuff yet.  Mothers day is our time for tomatoes, peppers, etc.  But these will handle the cold if or rather when we get anther cold snap.  We will, I'm sure.  But the south has had such a non winter this year, I have mowed grass once and it needs to be done again now.  Amazing.

Hi Price!!

The neighbor was out yesterday planting "yellow flowers" he said by his mailbox.  I know the growing seasons are a lot different here than in MI, but I'm still being optimistically cautious.  I took a Master Gardner's class several years ago and first thing I thought when I saw him doing that is "the ground my be 55 (think) degrees before seeds will germinate" - lol... funny how things pop in your mind at times.  I don't know if the ground will maintain that temp here for now, as 55 is the normal HIGH for this time of year.   I'm sure there are some plants that are more hardy than others and can withstand the cooler temps.  Perhaps thats the difference between seeds and already established plants.

There certainly are things that can handle the cold and others that can't.  I won't plant tomatoes, squash, peppers, etc for another month or 2.  The greens can handle a frost, so could peas but I decided against them this year.  Germination is a whole different ball game and even some that can survive the cold, want a warm day to germnate.
