Uuuggghh, I am miserable!

The pain was so much better over the past two day...and then last night I started feeling awful.  Nauseous, Pain really high in my stomach, and horrible pain really low in my back. I actually had the urge to use the bathroom, and was able to have my first "normal" BM, which seemed to really help my low back.  Overall I started feeling a tiny bit better, but then afternoon I started the whole thing all over again....and again had a BM.  Is this normal?  Surely I won't feel this way everytime I have to use the bathroom, cause I am one of those who goes 3x's a day!  Seriously this is just an awful feeling, and then I am totally zapped.  Plus, I haven't been able to eat anything all day.  All the shakes/fluids I have been getting in over the past week are suddenly so gross I can't stand it.  Why would my tastes change today?!? Also, what do you suggest for the nauseousness?

I remember BMs being painful in the beginning but it did get better until I later became constipated which was a different type of pain. You will not be going as frequently as before as your intake is much less so make sure you use Senna or something to help. I was sent home with Senna and it helped immensely. It is also over the counter so be sure to get some. It is not meant for long term use but for the first few months it will help. You'll need it every day for about one week at least, likely longer. Then you can switch over to Muralax. And then when it seems appropriate, you can add in a teaspoon of Metamucil free & natural to your foods. I'm sitting here eating lunch and I added 3/4 tsp to it to bump up the fiber.

I have heard of taste changing. It did for me. Luckily, I could handle my protein drinks but at the same time I had 3 brands and about 12 different flavors! I remember likely Atkins Day Break drinks and SlimFast cafe mocha. Try your drinks at room temperature also. It might help.

Nauseousness might get better if you find drinks you can tolerate better. Hopefully others will come with more advice.

I had been determined to not throw up....just lost the battle.  Just not sure what made me puke?!?  I had four sips of a protein shake, and it was all over. I am actually hungry, but afraid to put anything in my tummy.  Plus I think I may be getting dehydrated.  This is all such a balancing act, on top of having to re-learn your body!  Sure appreciate all your help and advice guys.

It's probably Gas.  The gas is terrible and causes awful pain.  Walking is about the only thing that helps with the gas.

All of our tastes change after surgery but it eventually comes back.  There are some things like cherry flavoring that I still can't stand.  Everything tastes sweeter, sourer, stronger.  I found that softer flavors like peach were good for me.  Save the shakes and fluids if you can because someday you might be able to tolerate them.  In the beginning I had to use unflavored Protein and put it in the soups and foods that I could tolerate.

I'm not sure about the nausea.  I have no doubt that someone will have something to help you.  Maybe mint tea.

God is walking with me every step of the way. Because of HIM this is possible!!

Are you taking any pain meds? They can affect your tastes, they can also make you nauseous. There are also anti-nausea meds. Or try peach juice (not the unsweetened kind)...just toss the peaches and drink about an ounce of the juice. It WILL help the nausea.

Keep pushing the fluids...change temps if cold drinks are bothering you, try warm or even hot. But KEEP pushing them. I know it's hard but right now fluids are a must. Even protein can wait. Concentrate of finding something to get in as far as the liquid.

Some things to try:

Icee's

Popsicles

Broth

Hot tea or Ice tea (some can't do hot early on and some can't do cold)

Crystal Light or some other flavor water.

If you still can't get anything in, make a trip to your doctor or to the ER and get some fluids pumped in. Dehydration is the *****we don't want you to go there.

Hope you find something that you can tolerate.

Give yourself a break.  You just had surgery a little over a week ago.  Take it easy and baby yourself.

Your tastes may be altered because you are in ketosis.  That is when you are in the rapid weight loss phase, although I am over 2 years out and I have to admit that things still taste differently to me.  Even things I loved last year don't do a thing for me know.  I have gone through so many phases, phases where i ate the same thing for a long time then changed to something else and now I am indifferent to that food.  Like popcorn.  I loved it and ate it nearly every day for several weeks and then one day it just didn't sound good and I haven't wanted it since.  I learned not to buy a lot of anything because after a while I may not want it any more.  Just look in my pantry and you'll see several boxes of Nut Thins, different kinds of popcorn and other things that were staples for a while and now I can't be bothered.

My first BMs were horrific with cold chills and pain.  It didn't last long.  I take benefiber daily and I do go several times a day although that isn't really normal for WLS.  I eat pretty many veggies.  You won't in the beginning so do take something and don't be plugged up.

I had a hard time finding anything that was "good", everything was too strong.  So just delute it.  I still add lots more water to my crystal light, etc than normal.  That helped.  And everything had to be room temp or warmer.

It gets better.  I promise.

Hi,

My tastes are out of wack for sure. I have ordered a bunch of different proteins. The chocolate one I was drinking I found it easier if I added a bit of ice and Lactaid milk. I was sent home with meds for being nauseousness but was lucky and never had to use them. I'm still not getting all my liquids in but I just keep trying especially now with this flu i picked up somewhere along the line. Just dont ru**** take your time slow and steady if the unsettled stomach continues can you call your doctor to get something? I hope it gets better for you soon!

Are you mixing your protein drinks with water or milk?  Lots of people can't tolerate milk after surgery- just a thought.

Hope you get to feeling better.

Are you taking a PPI?  I get that "yucky" feeling at times when i don't take mine (4 years out).  I had to take it everyday for several years to ward off the bad feelings...
