Vitamins
I have purchased about 100 days worth of my vitamins. (following vitalady recommendations). I spoke with a friend today that is 2.5 years out from her DS. She said she now only takes 2 multi vitamins and 1 calcium a day. All her levels are good. Is this normal? or very unusual. She actually said at 6 months out she went to this regiment and her numbers all stayed good.
She is NOT at her goal weight. BUT she has lost 150 pounds
Each person is individual...
And if you follow a vitamin regime suited to YOUR lab work, all will be well. Some needs lots, some need just a little.
But starting with Vitalady's keeps us started and it's easier to keep things up than GET them back up after tanking.

I have a feeling her good numbers won't last long. She's probably using up her stores and then will crash everything and wonder what happened. Vitamins with a DS are nonnegotiable, she is playing silly games with her life and health. This surgery isn't only about losing weight but capturing and maintaining good health. Please lead her by example and be ready to pick her up when she falls.

"levels are fine" is great if they really are. They may look great to a Dr who doesn't understand them but be trending down getting ready to crash. That is why we suggest bringing your labs here and let folks review them. Keep a spreadsheet so you can see trends.
I have RNY folks who are telling me the same thing. I hope they really are. And I am one of those that seems to be ok with basically just my multis and calcuim although at 2 yrs did add iron.

I had a friend who had WLS a couple years before I did. She told me she didn't take any vitamins. then one day on the way home from work on the Chicago interstate system she passed out at the wheel. Lucky she suffered only a compression fracture to her back. Needless to say, her levels were way off. She now is more careful about her vitamins and supplements.
My Brother in Law had the RNY about 10 years ago. When I saw him summer of 2011 (I was about 6 months out), I asked him what vitamins he took, he said he didn't. I asked him about his levels, his comment was "the doc siad I'm doing great". Okay, maybe he is, but I suspect he's also gonna crash and burn at some point.
I can't tell him different as he thinks he knows more than I do since he has been dealing with this longer.

Hi Michelle...All of us are individuals...different body types and different needs! I suspect she will crash too as other posters have said..I am amazed how people think as we need our vitamins to sustain health after weight loss surgery! I hate taking all those vitamins but I know my body needs them to maintain my health. Good Luck with your weight loss journey!!
