Rebound weight and the mind game.....

So I have gained 9lbs .... Of course some of it was the holidays.... I was post op last year during the holidays and I was very careful this year bit apparently maybe I did over do it... I am about 20lbs under my goal weight so I know gaining the 9lbs isn't or shouldn't be that big of a deal.... But I cringe every time I get on the scale... That fear of the person I once was comes back.... It's more of a mind game at this point.... No one around me understands how gaining 9lbs can cause me such anguish..... They're all like good you need to gain..... They have no idea how terrified I am inside... Of gaining weight.... I am very aware of what and how much and how often I eat.....I guess I just needed to vent to someone that understands....

No, you keep on top of this. It is a mind game. We may be skinny on the outside but we still are obese on the inside. We have to be diligent.

My low was 111 which by all accounts was too low but I am now hovering around 122-124.  That is where my Dr wanted me and no one has even acknowledged that I am gaining, look fat, etc.  My clothes still fit.  BUT, it scares me and I am not happy.  I am working to get back under 120.  Certainly doesn't happen as quickly as it did when we were in losing mode.  I understand exactly where you are coming from.  I think I had kind of thought a 5 lb rebound would be ok but now we are over 10 and it is very scarey.  STILL LEARNING MAINTAINANCE, IN YEAR 3

We all know what you're talking about.  Maintenance is an ongoing learning process for me almost 4 years out.  Feel I'm getting a handle on it, but no firm formula yet.  We just have to keep working our tool.

If you would post what kind of WLS you had it would be easier to answer you.  I'm writing as if you had a RNY.

You are probably still within the honeymoon period but just at that point where you are starting to absorb so this is the time where everything you have learned along the way has to be taken seriously and stuck to every day.  I am a creature of habit and if I stray away from my every day routine the scales let me know but that gets me right back on track and it comes off just as easy.

My low was 106 and once I hit the 2-2.5 year mark and trying to figure out maintenance I put on some weight and you are right it is really upsetting. For the last year and a half I have hovered between 118-120 (hit 117 last week 1 day and was so happy).  I thought I looked great at 106 but now after looking at some pictures of those days I realized I didn't look as great as I thought.  When I look at pictures and in the mirror now I see a healthy person who feels good about herself.

It's not so much about the number but more about are you following your plan.  If you are watching your eating habits closely (snacking etc.), getting your protein in, watching you carbs, etc. you will get some bounce back pounds but I think just like our body knows how much to lose it knows just how much we need to weigh to stay healthy.

I warn posters all of the time about falling into bad habits.  You can eat almost anything during the honeymoon period and not gain weight but it's not like that once your body starts absorbing and definitely not like that once you are on Maintenance.

Hello...I agree with the other posters!  This maintenance thing is very real!  We always have to watch our weight and that scale is not going to sugar coat if we have been snacking too much or munching on the wrong things!  Everything in moderation!!  Its an ongoing battle for all of us and using our tool is what will help us keep the weight off!!  Good Luck!

Thank you for posting this, I am 8 yrs out from RNY. I had been at 129 lbs until last yr and now the game is on...I fight the mind game everyday and I know where I picked up the weight. Not exercising everyday, not so much eating more or the wrong things. My body expects to exercise and the scale tells it. At least you are ahead of the mind games by keeping good track of your weight. God bless...
