I am really struggling maintaining weight let alone trying to loose weight. I have three weeks to make sure I dont gain anything and hopefully loose at least SOME weight before I get weighed by my nut. I am having surgery on April 10th and my history shows that it is a dangerously long amount of time for me not to gain weight. I'm terrified. I posted in vsg asking if anyone has fasted to loose weight before surgery and if so how did they do it successfully to be sure to qualify and safely have surgery. If anyone has any tricks of the trade please let me know. my only concern abou****er fasting is that my pulse drops pretty low while fasting after a week or so but other than that fasting is much much much easier than trying to go on a liquid diet. for some reason I am starving on liquids and retain water but while fasting after the first day or two im not hungry. ANY suggestions will be greatly appreciated

What about calling a friend that you could work out with?  I love the companionship and competition. Working out helps with hunger pains etc.  Also, a menu plan and stick to it!  I have found that keeping your mind and/or hands busy is a plus.  If you haven't taken up knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting or even reading you should consider a hobby that keeps your mind busy and off of food.  What are your interests?  Find something NEW to learn and fun!  Good luck.

at the moment i am having a god awful time trying to exercise, even walking, because I have a terrible chest/head cold that is making it impossible to breathe. even with breathing treatements i am still wheezing so exercise for more than ten minutes or so is not an option. I have been surfing the oh site and my wls group on facebook for newbies and soon to bes but I dont work so i find myself by myself facing the fridge alone while everyone is at school or work.I do read a lot, and edit  a manuscript a lot but its not taking up all of my time like i need. I just have way to much time on my hands. I guess I'm gonna start my full liquid pre op diet a few weeks early. that should take some weight off. I dont know what else to do.

How about following the Atkins plan until your preop liquids start, or something similar?  That is what I did and I lost weight before I had to do my 2 weeks of liquids.  I did a modified version though where I ate eggs, cheese, Wendy's chili, home made taco salads (used salsa, no dressing). . .so I guess it really would just be a very high protein diet and cut out carbs.  That way you can "eat" but you're eating healthy choices.  I also ate greek yogurt and bananas and steamed shrimp.  I think that was pretty much my whole menu for a short period of time.

Hope this helps!!!

I had to a do a two week liquid diet with one sensible meal a day prior to my surgery.  Can you get some protein to make you protein drinks 3 meals and eat one good meal a day?  Mix it with fat free milk or something other than water to give you some substance so you won't be as hungry - the first 3-4 days are the hardest.

Do you write down everything you eat?  Sometimes that will help especially if you are going to eat something you shouldn't.  When I have to put it down I think about it more.  Try posting on Roz's Menus and Miles - that helps with accountability.  You don't have to have already had your surgery to post there.

I agree that if there is anyway you can at least walk some, it will help with your recovery after surgery.

Good luck and hang around here with us for support - we do not bash people - we are a very friendly group!!

Welcome to our LW Baord and Congrats on your upcoming surgery!!!   You don't have to worry about getting bashed on here.

I understand why you are worrying about gaining weight while you are waiting for surgery. I was told if I wanted to be approved  I wasn't allowed to gain for 6 months. My PCP put me on a 2000 calorie diet.   I actually lost 1 pound on each weigh in day for a total of 6 pounds. I remember really cutting back the weeks I was getting weighed.

Watch your salt!!  Don't drink carbonated drinks. Eat/Drink Protein and NO CARBS AT ALL!  Even try to avoid fruit for right now.  Try to eat SMALL meals every few hours to keep the cravings away.

God is walking with me every step of the way. Because of HIM this is possible!!

Welcome.  I second the very low carb (like just veggies) and protein.  Get plenty of fluids, no sodas, decaffeine, and you should be good to go.  Let us know how you are doing!!!

my main concern is that for six months i gained weight in 10 months i put on 20lbs. in one way it was good cuz it put me at exactly 40 bmi but in another way it screwed me cuz now this last two months it is imperative that I loose weight. from Jan to feb I lost 4 lbs but it seems i've put it all back on. Not sure if its because of water weight or if i just suck. but now i have to get that four pounds off plus at least one pound more. I'm sure he would like to see greater than a pound weight loss especially since it will be a month and half between feb and march appointments. I will have another weigh in right before surgery too which will be another month from the march weigh in. if between now and my surgery day i gain even an ounce he will post pone. THAT SCARES ME since I have been waiting so long. by the time my surgery comes i will have been going through the process for 11 and 1/2 months. I dont want to be postponed any longer. If i dont make my surgery date im looking at june the earliest. So stressed over this. My bf is making me a special dinner for valentines day but I am doing protein shakes breakfast and lunch then the dinner and friday all shakes, broth, and jello THATS ALL. I have to loose this weight and the more I loose the better I will feel. If I could be below 200 by surgery date I would be THRILLED. that gives me almost exactly 2 months to loose 16+lbs.

I lost about 11 lbs while waiting to have surgery. (mid Sept through mid December). I cut back drastically on diet coke and that was a big help. I started eating less and limited sweets and carbs. I avoided fast food of all kinds and started eating more at home than out. I watched my portion sizes too since once I took the required class I became more conscious of what and how much I ate.  I even took two cruises and didn't gain either time.  That was a first. It was not uncommon for me to gain 7-10 lbs on a 7 day cruise.

Of course I gained 14 lbs in the hospital following surgery but by then it didn't matter.
