CHRIS~~Your surgeon is really the only one who can judge if you are "in shape" enough to have the surgery. But, remember that this surgery is performed on morbidly obese people who for the most part are not in shape. My surgeon recommended that I get some exercise pre-op, but there was no requirement on how much or how in shape I had to be. You should be fine.

Hi Chris~~I saw your post on the message board today. I don't think 1/3 of a mile is bad at least you are determined to move!!!! The point is you are trying to do everything you can to prepare your body for surgery. I am 31 and before surgery it would take me 45 minutes walk a mile. Now at 5 1/2 months post op I walk 4.5 miles a day and it takes me 1 hour and 10 minutes. I also ride my bike and go hiking now. It will get easier for you to improve your stamina once you start to lose weight trust me. Just remember to get out of bed the second you can in the hospital and start walking. It will help your recovery and start you off on the right foot. Best of luck to you. Wendi Open RNY 9/19/02 down 103 lbs

Chris, I'm sure most people here can tell you they were not in shape pre-op. If your doctor gave you clearance for surgery you will be fine. Post-op you will not believe all the energy you will have. It is so strange! In the past a diet of 1000 calories would leave me weak as all hell. For some reason this surgery gives you the opposite effect. I've had tons of energy since week 4. I am a big baby and spent the first week or two post-op pretty much sleeping on my couch and watching movies at home. I think I liked my pain med a little too much. It was some sweet syrup that knocked me out. I think hydrocodine? Since I love to sleep and hate any kind of pain, this drug was my best friend. I met a lady last week up and running around one week post-op. I was looking at her like wow, I really was a wimp! You'll be just fine and walking marathons in no time. Don't be so hard on yourself. Best of luck! You'll be fine!
