Two Weeks Post-Op

May 24, 2011

So, it's been two weeks to the day since my surgery and I'm feeling pretty good. The steri-strips are off and the swelling is beginning to go down a bit. My time in the hospital was pretty much what I had expected based on my previous experiences recovering at Penn.  I felt like a tangled, unconfortable mess of wires with restricted mobility. The nursing care was fair at best, and the lack of communication amongst the staff simply perplexing. Let's just say that I was glad to walk out of there come Friday morning! The first few days at home were fine. I was tired and sore, but so glad to be in my own bed (despite the fact that I had to sleep on my back and propped up on a wedge pillow).

The liquid diet seemed to be keeping my belly filled, but as always, my brain wanted more food. At my first weigh-in (one week post-op),I had already dropped eighteen pounds. However, that also included two weeks of pre-op dieting. My next weigh-in is tomorrow (two-weks post-op).

I also began the pureed stage of the diet today. I added some mashed potatoes with brocolli, string cheese and some black bean puree. Of course, they all tasted amazing to me after two weeks of nothing but liquids! However, I really struggled today to maintain my food plan. I mean, I only consumed about 700 calories, but I spent the day grazing and it terrifies me. My brain just doesn't want to let go of the addiction. I want to nip these bad habits in the bud, so I think it's time to start searching for a good support group and a therapist that specializing in eating disorders. Next step is to make the calls.
