My Surgery Experience

Feb 10, 2009

We left the house around 5 am Dec 31st 2008, and I had to be there at 6:30 am.  My best friend and hubby went with me. I got there and got lost in the hospital of course!  We finally found the pre-op area, and they weighed me and took me to my room.  My Nurse asked me to strip down and put a hospital gown on, and she would be back to start the IV.  So, I got into my gown and got into bed and got comfortable.  A different nurse came in and started my IV, without a hitch!  No pain at all getting it in, but she did numb it first.  Me, hubby, and bestie were taking pictures with my camera. Dr. Roller came in to check on me.  He said there was a guy before me,and I was 2nd to go.  So we waited and waited and the nurse finally came back in to tell us there was an emergency and I would be delayed.  This really made me NERVOUS!  But finally, at around 10:30 am, they came and gave me he happy medicine, and took me to the OR.   All I remember is scooting over on the operating table and then they put the mask over my mouth and I woke up in recovery.  I guess I was moaning or making a face, because as I woke up, I heard the nurse ask  me what was wrong and where I hurt.  I remember saying, "pain, nausea!"  Then she started shooting me up with the good stuff.  I had to go to ICU because of my sleep apnea, and I got in my room around 2 pm.  It sucked because my hubby could only come for 30 mins every 2 hours.  I pushed my morphine button so many times in an hour, it started beeping, but it can't give
you more than so much.  It's pre-programmed.  Then I started breaking out and itching all over, and the next morning, we figured it was the morphine.  So, they switched me to dilauded.  BUT, I did'nt get to take any of it, because my IV infiltrated, 3 times!  They stuck me 5 times and still could'nt get a vein, so Dr. Roller switched me to liquid lortab.  That stuff was stout!  By this time I was moved to my private room.  The next day was Friday, Jan 2nd 2009, and I got to go home.  The first 3 days were the worst for the pain.  I only took like 3 painpills at home.  And the first 2 weeks were the toughest food wise.  Well, thats my surgery experience.  The staff and hospital were great!  And Northwest Medical Center in Springdale has the best beef broth ever! LOL Dr. Roller was awesome and I would reccomend him to ANYONE!  OH yeah, he said my surgery only took 1 hr 7 mins!
