Why I Want Gastric Bypass Surgery Hellen R. Gable

1. I want to be able to breathe without gasping

2. …walk without hurting

3. …sit without ‘spilling out’ of the chair

4. …live without fear of breaking furniture

5. …wear pretty clothes

6. …be healthier

7. …be happier

8. …lose some inhibitions

9. …gain self-confidence

10. …and just feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The story’s been told over and over and over… I was a cute baby, plump toddler, chubby adolescent, big-boned teenager, slightly overweight young adult, and am now a morbidly obese middle-aged adult. I have lost weight using: Liquid diets, Weight Watchers, TOPS, Atkins, Scarsdale, Dexatrim, some kind of chewy, chocolate appetite suppressant, etc. But I was never able to keep it off. In fact, I’m a walking example of the yo-yo syndrome. Over my lifetime, I have probably lost a total of 400-500 pounds, but gained it all back and even some more. At this writing, I am approximately 380 pounds. This is a lifetime high for me.

I have the following conditions which are most likely a result of being morbidly obese: 1. High Blood Pressure (medically treated via Atenolol) 2. High Cholesterol (medically being lowered via Crestor) 3. Osteoarthritis (relief through Tylenol arthritis) 4. Acid Reflux (Nexium) 5. Depression (Zoloft) 6. Also taking additional Potassium and 81 mg Aspirin 7. Sleep Apnea (on CPAP nightly)

I am physically unable to walk 30 feet without difficulty breathing. I can’t tie my shoes without sitting on a soft, flexible surface in order to put my leg up. Dressing is an awkward challenge because I can’t bend over to pull my pants up. I have to literally step into them leaning sideways. With the arthritis, I have constant pain in my knees and feet from holding up and carrying around almost 400 pounds. Tylenol arthritis has helped to a small degree; anti-inflammatory medication was used in the past, but did little more than Tylenol.

My back constantly hurts and I have muscle spasms that cause me to arch my back in pain. I am researching every aspect of gastric bypass surgery – pros & cons, pluses & minuses, and life & death situations. I fully believe that it is the right tool for me to gain permanent weight loss.
