16 Weeks Out!

Dec 30, 2008

Wow, I cant believe it is already the end of 2008!!! When I think back to what this year has brought me, I am amazed!! One year ago, I was still in the mindset that I would never ever think about having WLS! I thought I was meant to be SMO my entire life. Then in March of 2008, I had a huge awakening and realized that I needed to do something or I wouldn’t be around to see my children grow up.    Today it has been 16 weeks since I had my surgery. I had hoped to be at 100 pounds lost by tomorrow (the start of 2009), but I am okay that I am not there yet. I realize that my body needs to adjust to these changes and try and catch up to itself.   Okay so where am I at??   1. I have lost 89 pounds (this includes the 15 pounds I lost prior to surgery). 2. I have 58 pounds to go to my first major weight goal! 3. I have lost 25.6% of my body weight. 4. I am 11 pounds from my first 100 pounds lost. 5. I am 36 pounds from my husband’s weight. 6. I have lost 53% of my excess weight. 7. To get to my ideal weight of 160, I have less than 100 pounds to go! 98 to be exact. 8. I am 1.7 points away from a BMI under 40! I have 11 pounds to go to get there!

I was having a conversation with one of my coworkers today regarding how far I have come since my surgery.  We were talking about the before and after work ID pictures I have.  She mentioned that she didnt think anyone really saw me as I truly looked in the before picture.  I said "that may be, but that is how I felt..."

I may have wanted to be the person I am becoming and I may have sent off vibes that I was this super confident, proud of myself person, but in reality I really disliked myself inside and I knew that I was heading down a path of self destruction.

I have also decided to put together an email/letter to my extended family explaining the surgery that I had and why I chose to have it.  And to offer myself for any questions that they have.  I think this will help clear up any rumors/talk that is going on.  Well hopefully it will clear up at least some of it.   As my coworker suggested, maybe one of them is considering having the surgery and they will feel comfortable coming to me with questions.

Different take on the goal weight

Dec 29, 2008

So I found this BMI calculator that offered an easy look at coming up with a goal weight.

If I lost 80% of my EBW I would be at 176 lbs.  At that weight my BMI would 28.4.

This would mean I would need to lose 82 more pounds.  The thought of this kind of scares me...

Average Weight Loss After Surgery 171 lbs. To Lose 80% Excess Body Weight
Weight Loss Needed for BMI less than 25 192 lbs.
Weight Loss Needed for BMI less than 30 161 lbs.

Revalations

Dec 26, 2008

I finally told my mother in law about my surgery yesterday.  She mentioned my weight loss again and so Tim and I decided to tell her.  I am pretty sure she already knew.  I pulled her aside and said "about my weight loss, I had surgery."  her response "That's great! How wonderful" and then she turned around and walked away.  This is a woman who is obsessed with weight and health issues and is a hypochondriac.  Had she not already known she would have asked a thousand questions....ugh, family drives me nuts!!!!  My brother in law and sister in law knew about the surgery and it wouldnt surprise me if they told her.

My mom told one of my great aunts as well (who works with 2-3 extended family members).  And one of my 2nd cousins sent me a Christmas card and mentioned it in a note in the card.  One of my other great aunts mentioned it in the card she sent to my mom.  And then one of my other 2nd cousins saw my cousin Jenny (who knew about it already) and mentioned to her that she heard I had surgery and was losing a lot of weight.

I am not ashamed that I had surgery.  I tell anyone (well almost anyone) about it if they mention my weight loss.  But I dont want rumors running around and people making up their own assumptions about what I had done and how it is affecting me.  If someone wants to know about it, then I want to be able to answer their questions and put a positive spin on it.  The surgery I had is not the traditional Bypass and so the way my body reacts is going to be different.  I might be able to eat something that others cant.  But I know that people may see me eating it and think "oh look she is going back to her old ways and that weight is just going to come right back on."

Anyways I know I just need to get over it...but it frustrates me that people think they can share such personal information with others without dicussing it with me first.

14 Weeks out

Dec 17, 2008

So I think I have officially hit my first stall.  I am 14 weeks out today and am up a pound from yesterday.  Part of that may be because of the IV I had yesterday for my endoscopy.  I knew that my weight loss was going to start slowing down, but it is still a hard thing to do deal with.  I just need to refocus myself and look at what I am eating and how I am handling my stress right now.  One of the biggest things is to get back to exercising!

I also wanted to take this time to reflect on how many inches I have lost.  Although I have been taking measurements, I havent been posting them or talking about them.  So here goes...

8/26/08
Hips: 66 inches
Bust: 60 inches
Waist: 58 1/2 inches

12/18/08
Hips: 53 inches (-13 inches)
Bust: 46 inches (-14 inches)
Waist: 46 inches (-12 1/2 inches)

Total inches lost:  39 1/2 inches!!!!

When I look at that number I am just astounded!   I have lost over 3 feet of inches!  So even though I have not lost any weight this week, I still feel good about where I am heading and what is going on with my body!

Endoscopy

Dec 17, 2008

I had a ultrasonic endoscopy done today.  This procedure is performed by only a few doctors in Michigan. It was done to measure/evaluate the mass that my surgeon found near by duodenium switch. The doctor who performed the procedure today could not find any questionable mass.  He said it is a slight possibility that the scope could not find it because it is on the outer part of my intestine and not visible from inside the intestine.  he said if my surgeon was still concerned about it, they would have to do a CAT scan to look for it.  But he did not seem to think that was necessary.  I plan on calling my surgeon's office tomorrow because if they want to do a CAT scan, i would like it done this year since I have met my insurance deductibles/coinsurance already.

the endoscopy was very strange!!  I had to have an IV and they gave me a medicine which kind of knocked me out.  I also had a spray put in my mouth that I had to swallow and that was to numb my throat.  It was absolutely disgusting!!!!  I kept goign in and out of consciousness when the doctor was inserting the tube (I think they want this so you can help them by swallowing to get the tube down there).  It was really weird feeling and I kept gagging and one point even went to pull the tube out.  I really thought I had only been back there for a few minutes when I finally woke up in my room.  But it had been about an hour since I left my room.  I felt quite tired when I got home, so I slept for about 2 hours.

My throat still hurts, but other than that I feel fine.

3 Month Surgiversary

Dec 09, 2008

I am officially 3 months out from my surgery. I have lost a total of 85 lbs since the start of my two-week pre-op diet. I had my 3 month post op check up today and that went well. My BMI has gone down 12 points according to their records. According to mine it has gone down 14 points. They said the average for a patient with the RnY was 10, so I am doing wonderful in their eyes. Andy, the exercise guy, was great. We talked about some options for me to do some strengthening exercises and I tried out a few of their exercise bands. I found them to work well with my elbow, so I am going to start doing some of the exercises he recommended with the band.

They also reviewed my lab work and my glucose was 99. In the past I have struggled with Insulin Resistance and consistently been around 110 for my fasting glucose levels. Most consider below 100 in the normal range. I am ecstatic to be in the normal range and not be on the glucophage anymore!

1. I only have 62 pounds to go to my first major weight goal!
2. I have lost 24% of my body weight so far.
3. 15 pounds from my first 100 pounds lost.
4. 40 pounds from my husband's weight.
5. I have lost 45% of my excess weight!
6. To get to my ideal weight of 160, I only have 102 lbs to go!
7. I am 2.2 points away from a BMI under 40! At 247, I will be at a BMI of 39.9.

I had two major NSV’s (nonscale victories) this past week. The first is that I bought a dress in a size XL and it fits. It’s a little tight, but I can get it around my body and move in it. It may be another 20-30 pounds before I feel comfortable wearing it in public, but I know I am going to be able to wear it! And on Sunday, I went sledding with the kids and Tim. I was kind of moaning and groaning about having to go, but in the end I really enjoyed it. And even better the kids loved having me be a part of it.

12 Weeks out and 80 lbs gone!

Dec 01, 2008

I am posting this a day early because I was very excited by what I saw on the scale this morning! I have officially lost 80 lbs!!

1. I only have 67 pounds to go to my first major weight goal!
2. I have lost 23% of my body weight so far.
3. 20 pounds from my first 100 pounds lost.
4. 45 pounds from my husband's weight.
5. I have lost 42% of my excess weight!
6. To get to my ideal weight of 160, I only have 107 lbs to go!

If I wanted to be at a BMI of 25, my ideal weight would be between 155 & 160. I really honestly dont ever see myself weighing 160. Heck I really dont see myself weighing 199, but who knows what will happen! In one of my earlier posts, I mentioned that I would like to have lost 100 lbs by Christmas. I think I am going to be cutting it close, but it is a definite possibility!

10 Weeks Out

Nov 19, 2008

I am 10 weeks out from my surgery as of yesterday. I am down a total of 72 pounds! My loss is slowing down quite a bit, but I am still losing!!!

This morning I pulled a shirt out of my closet that I have never worn, it still had the tags on it! I think my mother in law bought it for me about 7-8 years ago. Of course it fits me wonderfully today!! It might even be a little too big.

Also last night I was standing in front of the large mirror we have in our bathroom. I turned sideways and sucked in my belly. When I did that I noticed that my butt went up a little bit. I honestly cant say the last time I could see my butt muscles contract in the mirror! Unfortunately it showed me how saggy my butt is, but hey at least I can see the muscles in it now!!

I am also trying to get back on track with my exercise. I did 21 minutes on the Wii fit last night and it was fun. I just need to make a point of doing it once the kids are in bed. It is hard to focus when they are watching me. Last night I did it after they went to bed and I broke all the records I had for the step aerobics and hula hooping. I also opened another level of the step aerobics and while it was difficult, it was a lot of fun!

Here are some updates on my goals:

1. I only have 75 pounds to go to my major weight goal!
2. I have 1.5 pounds to lose to be at my half way point!
3. 28 pounds from my first 100 pounds lost.
4. 53 pounds from my husband's weight.
