Twin Cities Triathlon

this is the account of my swimming, biking and running the Twin Cities Triathlon in Pineville Louisiana. The distances were 500m open water swimming, 18 miles on the bike and 5K for the run. I set a goal to finish this triathlon in an hour and forty five minutes. The swim was 300m shorter than the Louisiana Triathlon but the bike and run were almost exactly the same distances so I didn't see any reason why 1:45 wasn't unattainable.

Triathlon #7 AND #8 of the year will be completed by Team 464 this weekend.   I'm going epic and doing a doubler!   That means I get to write TWO race reports on Monday.  :)

This weekend should actually be easy compared to NEXT weekend.   I'll be doing my longest distance race so far in my triathlon career.   The run and bike are just short of the Half-Ironman distance and the swim is just OVER the Half-Ironman distance.   (1.24 mile swim / 40 mile bike / 10 mile run)   This will be a challenge for me to say the least.   I'll be able to smoke the bike and run but the swim...  I just keep telling myself that "All I gotta do is get outta the water".

What's got me a little scared and got me going to the cardiologist next week for a full workup is that a guy died of a heart attack last weekend at the Gulf Coast Triathlon.   38 years old, perfect health and he had a heart attack in the middle of the swim and drowned.    After doing some research deaths during the swim are more common that I suspected.   At least a few deaths a year happen during the races and it seems like it's always a heart attack during the swim.   Doc said it had a lot to do with the excitement of the race environment and the cold water constricting your blood vessel.  That raises your blood pressure and makes your heart work harder.   I'm glad he didn't tell me that it was because slow swimming and getting kicked in the face constantly wasn't a contributing factor.   If that was the case I'd be forked!

I ran the "Get Out of My Way 5K" today in Zachary, LA. I didn't have a PR for this race by any means but it was still fun and I ended up taking third in my age group which is the FIRST time I have won hardware (a blue mug) at ANY race. I ran the first mile at a 6:45 pace and then slowed down considerably from there.

"Spanish moss in my hand turn me into CRAWFISHMAN!"

The weather was perfect. I'm officially a 'Crawfishman' now with the completion of the race. I felt even more comfortable in the water and although I struggled like I normally do I did better. The bike and run were challenging with the hills but nothng I couldn't handle. I broke 2 hours which I am told is very respectable.

See www.team464.com for pics and race report.

Forgot to post that I completed the LA Tri on the 19th. I'm posting more and more on my www.team464.com website and less and less here unfortunately. Either way I did write a race report and it's up at http://www.team464.com/latri2008/

Crawfishman is this weekend. It's almost as long as LoneStar so it should be a nice challenge.

I also hired a tri coach last week to train me for Ironman Florida or Ironman Kona if I get in the lottery for Hawaii. Either way I will be an Ironman in 2009. :)

Another weekend and another triathlon complete! This one was a shortie but it was still fun and I got to hang out with my fellow BR Tri members.

I put up a full race report with pictures at http://www.team464.com/t-gator1-08/

Well, I made it.   The swim was a BIG struggle for me, I had a near fatal 0mph crash at transition 2 when my brain was moving faster than my feet as I was trying to get unclipped from my bike and I spent around 30 - 40 minutes in the port-o-lets during the run.   All that aside it was a great day.  I rank it right up there behind the marathon.  I choked back the tears at the finish but after 3 hours and some change out on the course I think that was well deserved.

So, what quarter of me is Iron?   If I had to choose I'd hope it would be my heart, pancreas and maybe my right calf.  :)

I'm beat but I will post a full race report up at www.team464.com within the next few days.

A kind soul, new friend, accomplished triathlete and fellow member of my local triathlon club named Llew donated a new tri bike to me after reading my plight regarding my previous bike that was way too small for me. I couldn't be happier with it. It looks cool and it's quite comfortable. I installed my aero bars tonight along with some clip on pedals that a friend is letting me borrow for the Lone Star Quarter this weekend.

Here's a picture:
