First plateau.....and learning it's okay

Jun 05, 2009

Well, I haven't posted anything for a while. I haven't had anything positive to say, so I didn't say anything at all (isn't that what Mom always said?)

A little over 3 weeks ago I hit my first plateau. I realize after losing 98 lbs in 9 months that I've done amazingly well, but I am not a patient person and had it in my head that I would continue at that rate the whole time. Unfortunately, folks, that just isn't realistic. Over the last 3 weeks I have gained and lost the same few pounds several times. As of this morning, I'm back to my surgeon's goal weight again....but still about 20 lbs from where I want to be.

After not losing anything (and actually gaining a few pounds), I wanted to throw my hands up and just say "forget it!" (well, not actually the words I used, but I can't write those here!). I got really depressed and told my husband that I should have known better than to think I could get back into my size 8's, and who was I kidding? I found myself eating some stuff I shouldn't and too much of it because I was mad at myself and at the world.

In looking back, my reaction was really WAY over the top. My husband doesn't understand why I have this "all or nothing" mentality. I don't know either, but it is irrational and just causes me to get depressed. I know perfectly well that plateaus are normal and sometimes the body just needs time to catch up and reset itself, so to speak. Queen of denial that I am, I didn't think it would happen to me. Well, Duh.

I guess the lesson in this whole thing is that it's okay to have a plateau, even mess up a little. You just have to pick yourself back up, work a little harder and keep going. This was a speed bump, not a road block. I have been very successful so far, and will continue to be.

We all need to cut ourselves some slack, allow ourselves to be human and mess up from time to time, and not give up.

We can do it......and we will.
