**The Secret and The Truth**

May 12, 2007

The Secret is that I used a mathematical formula to get my weight off with the add of my band and the Truth is that it works.  This is not some made up mumbo jumbo that a quack dr. uses and passes on this is the how weightloss truly works.  If you get your your BMR and follow this it  will work for you.

Eventually your weightloss will start to slow down and  If you do not exercise DAILY eventually you will stop losing the 8-10 pounds a month that we all love losing because you just can not keep eating at such a restricted pace because your metabolism will level out.  So if you start to slow down to 4 pounds a month  or hit a plateau look at why.  For instance I have a BMR of 1500, I consume 1000 calories per day taking off the 500 calories required in order to lose a pound a week so I am losing 4 pounds per month.  Why would I expect to lose more?  I am doing nothing more to incur a greater loss.  I n order to get a greater loss I need to do more.  How do I do this I have to burn more calories.  And how do I do that?  Well, If I exercise and burn 500 calories more daily I will lose another pound per week.  Now I am up to 8 pounds lost per month.  The problem is it has to be on a daily basis.  NOT 3x a week not 4 x a week, but daily.  Just like I can't somtimes eat 1000 calories and sometimes eat 1500 it has to be daily.  If I was balancing my checkbook and I had 50 and spent 25 I would have 25 left I would always have 25 left I could not just decide I have 100 left.  This is math.  It does not work if you do not plug in the right numbers.

Below I have included the incuded the info I have used.  Now, online BMR calculators aren't all accurate, but this one has worked for me.  You can also have a dr. give you your BMR.  I urge you all to get this info and use it to get your proper caloric intake.

Your BMR, or basal metabolic rate (metabolism), is the energy (measured in calories) expended by the body at rest to maintain normal bodily functions.  This continual work makes up about 60-70% of the calories we use ("burn" or expend) and includes the beating of our heart, respiration, and the maintenance of body temperature.  Your BMR is influenced by a number of factors, including age, weight, height, gender, environmental temperature, diet, and exercise habits.

Because of the increased activity of cells undergoing division, the younger the person, the higher (faster) the metabolism.  And the taller and heavier a person is, the faster their metabolism.  The good news is that when you are heavier you burn more calories, and thus it is easier to lose weight -- however, one reason weight loss becomes more difficult as you lose weight is your BMR decreases.  Because of the greater percentage of lean muscle tissue in the male body, men generally have a 10-15% faster BMR than women - so it is generally faster for men to lose weight.  And when you go on restrictive, traditional diets, your BMR can drop, and that makes it important to increase activity levels during that time.  In general, depending on the intensity and duration, consistent exercise can also increase your BMR.

To lose 1 pound per week means that you have to consume 500 less calories daily than you burn.  To lose two pounds per week you have to consume 1000 less calories daily than you burn.  Beyond this amount of weight loss you can develop loss of muscle mass, which makes you feel tired and is not a healthy way to lose weight.

Vitamin Deficiencies

Apr 20, 2007

Topic: B1 Deficiency in Bandsters not Just Bypass

As a lot of you know I am facing a very serious operation on Thursday for my thyroid, but what some of you may not know or realize is that I also have another condition that is secondary to what is going on with my thyroid.  This problem is that I am vitamin deficient and according to my endo malnourished.  Now, I eat three times per day.  I was NOT taking vitamins everyday.  I took them for my first year and then I took them when I had the three pregnancies that led to miscarriages, but somewhere along the way I just stopped taking them.  I also started to get very stressed out and pb a lot.  My band was not tight it was all me.  As a matter of fact I have needed a fill for months, but I kept eating to fast and getting things stuck.  So let's see I was eating small amounts of food, throwing up a lot and not taking vitamins...what happened?  Well, I was in huge amounts of pain and I had no idea why.  I could no longer walk and I had no idea why.  I couldn't remember anything and would get very disoriented at times and had no idea why.  Now, I haven't been throwing up in months and the episodes pretty much were just contained to January, but that was long enough to deplete my body of what I had stored in it.

Now, I am positive there are people reading this judging me saying well, you did this to yourself.  YOU did not take vitamins.  YOU were throwing up.  Uh huh, yes.  It was all me.  I know that BUT....before I got my band I ate a lot more food.  I did not take vitamins and I was not throwing up so I never worried about this situation.  I was not purposely making myself throwup.  I was stressed and sick and who knows what, but it kept happening.  It's not like I am new to this I am almost two years out.  It's also not like I am an idiot.  I absolutely LOVE my band, but I gotta tell you all that I KNOW that there are a LOT more people out there that are throwing up on a daily basis that are not admitting it and you are going to end up very sick if you aren't taking vitamins and you don't figure out a way to stop throwing up.  I love all you and you know that I do.  I don't want anyone else to be in the position I was in a month ago.  How pathetic to be 36 and not be able to walk because of something I could have controlled.  Protein alone is not going to work.  Not eating carbs to cut back on calories is not going to work.  Be smart people.  We are doing this to be healthy.

On Thursday I face cancer and I know that I will beat this and I am a lot healthier now than I have been in months.  A few months from now I will be reporting that I am a lot healthier now than I have been in years!

Please read this article.  It talks about B1 deficiencies in bandsters not just bypass. Please do not think that this can not happen to us.  Just last night 2 more people on this board reported deficiencies.  And these aren't the only ones that I have seen lately... how many of you are now anemic?  Think about all this.  Take care of yourself and God Bless!

The Canadian Press article accurately reported that this study found WE (Wernicke’s encephalopathy) occurring after all types of bariatric surgeries: bypass and banding procedures. This concurs with the body of medical literature and other studies, such as in a 2003 issue of Obesity Surgery, finding WE after gastric banding. The risks for WE also increase with vomiting and the LAP-BAND System U.S. clinical trials for FDA approval reported that 89% of patients had at least one adverse event. “The most commonly reported peri-operative adverse events were abdominal pain and nausea and/or vomiting.”

Grocery Shopping is the Devil's Plot

Apr 19, 2007

Yesterday I decided I was going to get back on track and I did very well I might add until the dreaded trip to the grocery store...it was aweful. Temption was lurking everywhere.  My husband had to draw my attention to the new Strawberry Milkshake Oreos.  BUT I held strong to my convictions I tell you!  I knew if I could make it out of that store without buying junk I would be ok.  I bought snacks for the kids lunchs, but I was smart and bought things that would make me pb like those little donuts and cakey things.  In there lunches I give them one fruit and one snack and a sandwich and juice.

I toughed it out and I was richly rewards because this morning I was down one pound.
One glorious pound.  So I am going to beat this no thyroid having messing up my metabolism thing that is going on making me think I can't lose weight.  I say bring it on I am gonna win.  I know that I will not make my goal of -150 on 5/12, BUT I might make it to -140 and that is pretty darn good for 2 years out if I do say so my self!

**How Many Calories Should I be Getting Guideline**

Feb 27, 2007

Here is what I do then I track it on Fitday.com... As you increase your activities you increase the calories you consume. The advantage of a lap-band is that you are satisfied with fewer calories, as opposed to feeling "starved" because you are restricting intake. There is some data which suggests that the metabolic rate drop that occurs on calorie restricted diet does not occur with the lap band -- perhaps the brain is fooled by thinking you have eaten a meal, and therefore it does not need to decrease the metabolism. For activity we recommend something very simple -- walking. We recommend all of our patients obtain a pedometer and get to where you are doing 10,000 steps per day. This generally translates to walking about two miles a day. This is something to work up to, but a good goal. Your goal should be to get to walk a mile in 15 minutes. Water aerobics is an outstanding exercise if you have joint pain, or severe arthritis. http://www.drsimpson.net/06_weight_loss/BMR_calculator.htm

I need you all now more than ever

Feb 13, 2007

Today they did an ultrasound on my throid and found three large nodules.  Each one was larger than the other.  I have been scheduled for a biopsy on the 28th.  I can not believe they even found anything.  As I laid there I felt silly because I thought the dr. was going to tell me all the blood work was wrong and that the ultrasound was showing that nothing was wrong with my thyroid.  I was sadly mistaken both sides of the thyroid were enlarged and the right side contained the three nodules.  Right now I am in shock and my husband is in meetings until lunch so I have no one to talk to.  I just don't understand any of this.  Also my last round of blood work came back that I am anemic and have a very low vitamin D count so now I have to take iron and vitamin D along with the multi vitamin I am already taking.  And I have to have a bone denisty test done in a month.  She said she can not start to treat my thyroid until she finds out if there is cancer or not.  OMG?!?

April 20, 2007... so it was cancer and it was removed.  I am fine and taking synthetic thyroid and getting used to that.  I will be getting an ultrsound on my lymph nodes on May 4th I *think* and will write more then.  Thank you for all the prayers...so long and thanks for all the fish..hehehe

Interview Tomorrow

Feb 07, 2007

I have an interview tomorrow and I am soooo nervous. I hope that I calm down some tomorrow.  Today.  I am cleaning the house and doing laundry.  I have no clue what to wear.  They said business casual so that is much better than businees, I guess..LOL. I need new black flats.  I need to get my hairdid and I need to git my nails did.  I am going to get my nails did in the AM.  Not my hair right now.  If I get the job then I will get the hairdid. LOL.  You gotta say all that will a southern accent.

Getting this job will change my whole life.  I have not worked outside my house accept for travel to DC and Denver in the last three years.  My kids will go to YMCA after school (at their school) only for an hour.  I will probably be getting home around 5:30 so we will eat at 6 instead on 5 like we do now.  And I do most of the cooking and helping the kids with their homework so that will all change.  Plus there is the whole summer issue with the kids being in day camps and not with me all the time.
Big changes. Chinese New Year
