Surgery Date Scheduled!!

Nov 10, 2011

I don't normally get on my computer.  I browse on the iPad but I can't make updates to my blog on it, only in the forums :(  So I'm on my iMac today to say that I received a call yesterday (11/9/11) that I was approved for surgery!  My surgeon's office called this morning to schedule my surgery date which is...NOVEMBER 23, 2011!!  That's right, I'll be in the hopsital on Thanksgiving.  But you know what, that's totally ok with my husband and I.  It's not about the food anymore.  I'll miss seeing my family but I'll see them next month at Christmas...all skinnier :D teeheeheehee OMG!  Plus, my husband already has days off for Thanksgiving so more days to take care of me and the kids!

Another thing...everyone at the hospital and the surgeon's office is just as excited as the patient (well, not exactly) but they say, "congratulations, I'm so happy for you", "your new life starts soon."  Anyway, they seem really excited to watch patients go through this process.

Today is my "last meal" so to speak.  I'm having pizza, then it's 3 shakes a day, some fruit, veggies, and a sensible dinner from here on out.  I have been replacing breakfast and lunch with shakes but now it's serious time!  Time to really train for surgery and shrink my liver!  hooray!

I believe we have lift off!

Oct 19, 2011

I haven't reached the moon just yet!  But I'm pretty darn close :D  I just got a call from my primary care provider's office that they have finally faxed my medical clearance to the bariatric surgery team.  Now the bariatric surgery team just needs to send it to my insurance for approval!  HUZZAH!

I've already met with my awesome surgeon, Dr. Pesta.  Once I have approval, Dr. Pesta's office will call me with a surgery date and I immediately start the 2 week diet consisiting of:
3 low calorie shakes
5 fruits & vegetables
1 lean meat or fish
1 cup of rice or pasta

Since my last post, I've decided to get the Vertical Sleeve rather than the Roux-N-Y.  I'd also like to point out that it took my primary care physician's office a tad bit over 3 weeks to fax my medical clearance back to the bariatric surgery office.  I had my required blood work drawn the day of my medical clearance appointment.  My pulmonary function test was a week after my medical clearance appointment.  So, it took about 2 weeks for the results to come back from that.  I had to also wait on my doctor to fill out the medical clearance form that was required by the bariatric surgery office.

Because my insurance required I meet with the surgeon before approval, I had to meet with him before insurance was submitted which I updated in my prior post.

Hoop...jump! Hoop...jump! Hoop...

Sep 26, 2011

I had my consultation with the bariatric nurse; Sally Green at Henry Ford Health today.  It went well.  I'm still fat.  She went over my application and the other steps I need to complete for surgery.  She took "before" pictures.  She tried telling me I had a "hernia" that she could see through my jeans and I was just like...WTF...I've had 3 kids, it's called a "Mother's Apron."  But besides her being somewhat rude to misdiagnose my fat roll as a hernia, I got a little emotional over the whole process.  I'm going to be thin.  I'm going to be able to run.  I will be able to jump on my hubby's back for a piggy back ride.  I won't be tired.  I will be able to play with my children at the park.  I'm so flippen excited!!  My boys need their mama.  My husband needs his confident happy wife.

So what comes next?  My medical clearance exam with my primary doctor is tomorrow at 2pm.  The doctor will fill out a form that my bariatric nurse faxed her today.  She will fill it out, sign it and fax it back to nurse Sally.  Other things that need to be done prior to sending out for insurance approval:

9/27/11 - required bloodwork
10/3/11 - psych eval
10/4/11 - required pulmonary function test
10/5/11 - 6 hour wls class
10/13/11- meet with surgeon

after those are completed, they will submit this to my insurance company.  Insurance approval averages about a week for UM Premier Care.  Once approved, I get my surgical consultation for a surgery date and then pre-op surgery testing and viola, Roux-N-Y!  After surgery, 1x a week post-op wls suport group meetings :D

completed thus far:
8/22/11 - bariatric orientaiton
9/12/11 - primary care provider referral
9/26/11 - bariatric nurse consultation

Preparation

Sep 03, 2011

Monday, September 26th @ 12:30pm is my consultation with my nurse at the hospital.  I'd like to make a list of things I want to have together in order not to slow down the process.
For instance:
* call insurance, find out if they require specific forms for the psych evaluation
* schedule bariatric psych evaluation
* call old doctor to get sleep apnea study results from 2008
* schedule appointment with pcp to get bariatric referral

Bariatric Seminar

Aug 17, 2011

I'm attending the bariatric seminar at my hospital on Monday, August 22nd.  I'm super excited.  I went to a bariatric seminar back in 2008 at a different hospital.  Because of a change in insurance, that previous hospital is no longer covered.  I really like the new surgeon I chose.  He is experienced in his profession.  I hope that he will be at the seminar.
I'm also curious as to what information I will receive at the seminar.  I know I need to forms for my waived 6 month supervised diet (because my BMI is 50+) and the behavioral exam. Question is, does the hospital provide them or will I need to get them from my insurance.  I will find out on Monday!

Calling insurance

Nov 21, 2009

I need to call my insurance company.  I need to find out the exact requirements for WLS.  Assuming, I need to go on a 6 month diet, I'll schedule an appointment with my doctor.

I'm nervous about getting my incisional hernia repaired.  My mom said I won't be able to pick up my baby.  My husband will have to pick him up for me.  Joel isn't going to like that in the middle of the night!
