Officially Post-Op

Jun 21, 2013

Well my big day came and went. I arrived at the hospital at 0515 Monday June 17th with my mom and sister. The check in process was actually pretty quick. I was so happy I had gotten over my cold just the night before so I was breathing good and didn't have a fever. I met with my anesthesiologist and surgeon before I was wheeled into the operating room. I remember the anesthesiologist said I'm going to give you something to relax, then I looked up at the ceiling lights and thought "I wonder if this is the last thing I'll remember"...and it was lol. The next thing I know I was waking up in the recovery room and I had a bunch of gas pressure on my chest. I've watched countless videos and heard numerous testimonies about the infamous gas so I was prepared and didn't panic. I kept asking the nurse when can I get up and walk cuz I knew that would help but she said not until I was moved to my room. I got nauseous from the medicine and threw up on myself in bed. Finally they took me to my room which I don't remember and I saw my mom and sister. I threw up again (mostly dry heaving) and then was given some medicine. I think I napped for a bit and then got up and walked. It felt like I had done a bunch of situps but the pain wasn't bad, it was the gas that was a mother! I did a lot of walking and pedaling on the bike feet they gave me. My sister stayed with me the first night which was unexpected but very much appreciated. She kept me motivated to keep walking and doing my breathing exercises. I was feeling good and wanted to leave the next day but I still hadn't passed gas and couldn't pee. I wound up having to get three catheters and stay an additional night. Everything finally started working Wednesday morning and I did my drink test and was keeping down fluids so my doctor removed my drain and they released me around 7:00pm that night. I'm doing really well, I actually am at work now. I have minimal pain, and the gas is slowly subsiding. Last night I had a few bites of egg salad ( I wasn't supposed to move to the next stage until Sunday but I feel great and I kept it down. I'm still so shocked this has happened. I've lost some weight (mainly because of the pre-op diet) so some of my clothes are fitting better which is awesome! I can't wait for the changes ahead.
