Gastric bypass surgery is not a diet, rather a way of life and a series of choices.  T and I decided to go out to Wimpy’s diner in Bowmanville the other night for a treat.  We each ordered the Famous 10 ounce Wimpy's Burger (with bacon and cheese) and Fries with gravy.  Man that is one big burger.  I managed to eat about 1/3 of the burger and fries before deciding to doggy bag the rest.  I was stuffed after only a few bites.  Eating out after surgery does not have to be a stressful event that you agonize over.  Okay, Wimpy’s was not the best choice I could have made, but because I am in control of my eating decisions (most of the time) I can go out and have a crazy meal (within moderation) once and a while without feeling guilty or like I have cheated myself.  Granted that meal will stretch into 3 meals for me, and 4 or 5 for some of you that are newer out of surgery.  So much of my past eating was surrounded in guilt, shame and embracement.  I think that Kevan puts it best “I can’t ever remember feeling full.  I used to stop eating because I was embraced, not because I was full”.  In my past life before surgery,  I used to go through the Burger King drive through on Wednesday nights (cheap Whopper night) at 9:00 pm and buy 2 Whoppers with cheese, a large upsized fries and a large upsized coke.  I would then go home and eat that little snack in front of the television before getting sleepy and going to bed.  Can you say unhealthy eating at its finest !!  But you know, I made my own bed and laid in it for many years.  Choosing to eat that way was a choice that I made consciously.  No one made me do it…rather I wanted to do it.  I have to make a conscious effort every day to recommit to my much healthier lifestyle choices .  no one makes me make better choices, rather I want to make them.  Ok granted I can’t scoff back that much food in one sitting anymore, but I sure can live on a diet consisting of hit and run junk food and milk shakes if I choose to.  Gastric bypass surgery is not a diet, rather a way of life and a series of choices.
