Had to have a Scope

Apr 24, 2008

Monday night about 2 hours after I had eaten dinner I thought I would have some milk. Well the milk would not go down. Acutally it was Hoods Fat Free Dairy Beverage. I had had no trouble with dinner. I ddin't really feel anything was stuck until I drank the milk and it came back up. I got up Tuesday morning to go to CURVES. I always drink a bottle of water on the way, well that day I started feeling like it was going to come back up. It did. I went ahead and exercised. I was fine during my workout. I usually drink my Isopure on the way home from CURVES, I was not able to do so. It wanted to come back up. I got home and called Dr. Freeman's office, Anne the Bariatric Coordinator told me some things to do and call back if I wasn't better. I called back Tuesday afternoon and made an appointment to see Dr. Freeman Wednesday at 1pm. I got there, talked to Tim, the PA and then saw Dr. Freeman. He thought I might have a stricture or something caught. He wanted to scope me this morning but I had finals today. I had my scope yesterday afternoon because I had not eaten in 2 days and was only able to barely sip liquids. I am a gulper so I knew there was something wrong.
I had the scope and he didn't really find anything wrong in there. He told my husband all looked healthy.  He did remove a very tiny staple that was floating around. Apparently I did have something stuck but it moved out on its own. I'm glad I didn't have a stricture. He did prescribe Nexium for me and I go back in 2 weeks for a followup. I hope this never happens again. It was not fun.
Today I have been fine. The only thing that is really bad is I was so sleepy when I got home last night. I needed to study but was unable to. So I guess my finals did not go too well today.

Just a little update

Apr 20, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 227. I am now down officially 107 pounds since my highest weight back in August 2007, I am down 73 pounds since surgery. I think that is good but apparently I lose slower than some folks that I read have lost over 100 pounds in four months. Oh well, maybe losing slower will allow some of my skin a chance to catch up with the weight loss. I am now officially in size 18 jeans (the kind with no stretch whatsoever). I even have washed and dried them and they still fit. That is down from a size 28 just 4 months ago. I'm happy with that. I feel better and look better. I would change my avie but I can't remember how I did it the first time so I guess I'm stuck with the one I have for a while.
I have started riding my stationary bike for 30 minutes a day in addition to CURVES. I hope that increases the weightloss. I'm so ready to weigh in the 100's. I'm tired of having a 2 as the first number of my weight.
School is almost over, all that is left is the finals. YEAH!!!!!! Of course, I will only be out for 6 days before I start back. I'm taking 2 social work electives in May, then I will have the rest of the summer off. I will graduate next spring if all goes well. Then I guess it is on to get my master's degree. If I can stand anymore school.
That is what is going on with me. I still have foamies from time to time. Certain foods just don't agree. I had bakery cake icing for the first time last Thursday. It comes up the same as it goes down. I guess it is just too full of shortening. It was very tasty going down but coming up was Yuck!!!
I won't be making that mistake again soon.
M&M's don't bother me though. I have been able to stay away from those for a while now. I have to make myself quit wanting unhealthy things. It is a head problem. I will get over it.

Update

Apr 02, 2008

It has been a while since I last posted. Quite a few things have happened since then. I went for my 3 months check up on 3/17/2008 and the surgeon had not looked at my chart and asked me how the last 6 months had been? (he had been seeing 6 monthers before me). I told him fine but I was only 3 months out. He told me I had actually lost 2 pounds more than one of his 6 month out patients. I told him I didn't really think I was doing all that well, but I guess I am. I was about 60 pounds down since surgery. I am now 67 pounds down since surgery. I went on a mini vacation to Pigeon Forge, TN after the visit. I was able to buy some new clothes in size 18. That was exciting. I was wearing 26-28's before surgery. I got to start back to CURVES after returning from vacation. I was measured at CURVES on March 26, 2008 and before that the last time was Nov. 7, 2007. Since that time, I had lost a total of 52 inches and 86 pounds and my body fat percentage had gone down 6.5%. That was good to see. Now that I'm back at CURVES, I should be seeing even better results. I'm excited to be back working out and getting in shape.
This week I also got invited to join Phi Kappa Phi. That is an honor society. At my school only the top 7.5% of second term juniors get picked and the top 10% of seniors and grad students. I'm a junior so I was excited to be asked to join. I wasn't going to join, but figured it would look good on my resume and help me get into grad school. I should graduate with my Bachelor's next spring.
That is about all that is happening at the moment. I'm going to the state capitol, Montgomery, next week. The legislature is in session and that is Social Work Advocacy Day. Hopefully, the school social work program will be voted in this time.
I am happy with my RNY. I can't eat a lot and sometimes that is frustrating when it is something I really want. I know if I overeat I will be sick so I don't do it. Luckily, I don't really want to overeat often. I really don't miss anything. I don't dump so I can have pretty much what I want. All is good.

Just a little update

Mar 06, 2008

As of this morning I am down a total of 85 pounds since I decided surgery was the route for me. That makes a total loss of 57 pounds since surgery. I'm excited about that. I got blasted my some the other day because I posted I ate Fritos. I was worried to get on the scale this morning. I have been sick for over a week with a really bad cold/flu so I have not exercised a lot lately. I have to get back on track now that I am feeling a little better.
Just a note of update since I have not posted in a while.
Most days are good days. I still have foamies occasionally but I guess they are all my fault. I did find while I was sick, I don't like chewable medicines. Yuck.

Two months has passed

Feb 15, 2008

Wow!!! It's been 2 months since my surgery. Things are going pretty well. I have lost about 47 pounds since surgery for a total of 67 pounds since my first surgeon's visit. I still have some difficulty with foamies. I guess I just don't know how to chew. I still can't eat all that much at one time. My surgeon and nutritionist really didn't give me guidelines on how much to eat at any one time. I do have a guide I found on the internet and it is pretty conservative in the eating, but I can't eat the 1 cup of food it says I should be able to eat at a meal. I can eat 4-6 ounces of yogurt at a time on a good day, but it is a slider food. If anything has some texture to it, I can't eat very much. Somedays I can't even eat 1/2 cup of cottage cheese for breakfast. That's ok. I get full and know I have to stop and I do. The weight is coming off so I guess that is all that really matters. I usually get at least 60-80 g of protein a day and about 120 ounces of water and other fluids a day. I ride my bike everyday, well almost.  I try not to miss too many days. I am doing arm exercises with resistance bands. I have a lot of jiggle in my upper arms. At least the fat is going away. I just need to build some muscle.

Where do they put all that food?

Feb 01, 2008

I don't know where people that had their RNY after me are putting all that food they post they eat. I know, I know everyone is different. We all can eat different things and we lose weight at different rates. But really, where do they put all that food? One person that just had surgery about 3 weeks ago was eating all the chicken off a salad from Wendy's. Yes I will admit I'm jealous. Can't eat salads or that chicken yet. Another had 1/2 cup cottage cheese and some crackers, then had 1/2 cup yogurt mixed with fruit.  I can do the cottage cheese and yogurt in those amounts but I don't have room in my tummy to add anything else. I usually only have room for 3 meals a day. I don't usually get a snack in. Today I had yogurt for breakfast, then I had 1/2 ounce of beef jerky and 1 ounce of cheddar cheese for lunch, then 1.32 ounces of tilapia and about 1 tablespoon of potatoes. I don't really do protein shakes because I don't like them. I use Isopure RTD which is almost like drinking water since it is not a milky drink. I drink 1/2 in the early part of the day and then the other half later. It gives me 40g of protein. I need that supplementation since I can't really eat all that much food.  I actually rode my bike for 30 minutes today. I have only missed one day since I started riding it about 10 days ago. I lost more weight this past week too than I had been losing. I dropped 4 pounds. I was happy. Hopefully by my 3 month check up I will have lost another 20 pounds. We can only hope. But really where do they put all that food?

Exercise

Jan 25, 2008

I finally started riding my recumbant bike 3 days ago. I also started using dumb bells to do some arm exercises. I can really tell they are losing weight because they sure are getting flabby. I have got to get a handle on them. I am not cleared to go back to CURVES until the 18th of March. I don't want to strain any staple lines. I already have a hernia that has to be repaired when I lose my weight. Dr. Freeman wanted to wait until I lose weight so maybe this hernia repair will not have to be redone again. I hope I can continue to ride the bike everyday. It is so difficult to get into the groove of it.
Sometimes I feel like I eat more than other people that had surgery the same day I did. Other times I feel like I don't eat anything. Today Jeff and I went to a Mexican restaurant. I ordered a small lunch plate. I started eating the refried beans (I probably had about 2 tablespoons) and I probably had maybe 2 teaspoons of taco meat. I was full. They were the very best refried beans I had had since my surgery. My mouth wanted them all, but my tummy said no no no.  I still have to supplement with protein drinks and I don't get as much as the bariatric coordinator told me I need to get. I usually have at least 64-70 grams and she told me I should probably get 120 g. I don't see how that is possible. I still have not found a protein powder that I really can tolerate very well. My mainstay on protein drinks is Isopure RTD. Those are rather pricey and I don't really like the taste. They are just the ones I find the least disgusting. I hope that soon I will be able to eat a whole protein bar and maybe won't need the drinks at all. I also think I drink too much water at a time, but I guess as long as it doesn't bother me it is ok. I got up this morning and drank 32 ounces in about 45 minutes. I usually get up and drink water, then shower and get ready for school, then eat breakfast and then I'm set for school. If anyone reads this and has any opinions about the water in that length of time, all comments will be welcome.

FOAMIES!!!!!!!

Jan 15, 2008

I have got to learn to slow down and chew. I had the foamies for over an hour this afternoon. I came home from school starving to death, or I thought I was. I reheated a little bit of a chicken pizza that I had eaten yesterday without problem. I apparently ate too quickly and did not chew the chicken. The cheese and chicken is all I ate. I did not eat the crust. I knew the moment the one bit went down it was going to give me grief. It did for over an hour. I tried sipping hot tea after my episode had been going on for about 50 minutes. I had read that warm drinks sometime help. It helped all right. I finally threw up. I felt much better after that. This has happened to me 5 times now. Three times had been because of medications and twice because of improper chewing. I don't like the foamies. I don't think I would wish them on my worst enemy. If anyone is reading this, I wish you a foamie free RNY experience.

Whole Foods

Jan 03, 2008

I discovered there is a Whole Foods store in Birmingham today. It is actually in Mountain Brook. It is exactly 75 miles from my house. Jeff and I went there today and I was able to get Fage yogurt. I was also able to get some freeze dried fruit. I got strawberries and blueberries today. I also discovered Genisoy chips. Wow!!!! They taste so good and have either 7 or 8 g of protein depending on the flavor. I just tried the soytato sour cream and onion. I loved them The only problem is I could not eat the whole portion before I was full. I had them and 1 oz of lowfat cheddar cheese for dinner. I ate the cheese but could not stuff in the chips. Bummer, but I did not want to be sick so I stopped. My mouth was going more, more, more but my tummy was going no, no, no. Gotta love this RNY. Won't let me overeat and I wanted to. ARGH!!!!!! It is the first thing I have had that I actually wanted to eat more of than I should have. I will have to watch those chips. I did get 68 g. of protein and only 460 calories today. That was pretty good. I will probably drink a class of milk before going to bed. It will up the protein and help the cal citrate to go down. I have to get better with my vitamins. It is hard for me to get on a good vitamin schedule now that I found out I should wait an hour between my multi and my calcium. I have to get better. Don't want to be vitamin deficient.

Foamies

Jan 01, 2008

Yuck!!! I had the foamies Sunday night 12/30. I hope that never happens again. It almost did though yesterday. No, it was not from not chewing my food well enough or eating too fast. It was from taking my medicine. I got ready for bed Sunday night and I took my iron which is a little tiny pill and another medicine I take which is a little capusule. I also did a chewable vitamin C. I drank a little bit of water and laid down. I have been doing this basically every night for 2 weeks. Well Sunday night things got stuck. I could feel it betweeen my shoulder blades. It was a hard pain that would not leave. Then the foamies began. I got up hoping to throw up and I absolutely hate throwing up. Well I didn't. I just kept getting a mucousy thick clear liquid in my mouth. I stayed in the bathroom a little while moaning and groaning. Came back to bed but had to get up again. This whole episode probably lasted around 30 minutes. I was absolutely miserable. I thought well I won't do this again. Wrong!!! Yesterday, it was time to take another pill. This one is cut in two because it is rather long. I took it with no problem. A few minutes later I felt a pain in the middle of my back. I had my husband pat me not too hard on the back where the pain was. I guess he made the pills drop through because I did not foam. I also didn't get all my vitamins in yesterday because I'm afraid to try to swallow the pills. I have to get over this fear and try to get the vitamins in today. Sunday was the only day I have actually taken everything I needed to take and I ended up with the foamies. That is the only incident I have had though so I have been lucky. Wish me luck on the vitamins today. I will need it.
