Dr. Steward is wonderful. He is very personable, and wants to make sure that you understand what you are getting into. His staff was very friendly as well. My husband and I both felt very confident that this was the right person to have my surgery with.

June 04, 2002 I met Dr. Steward today. He was very friendly and honest. He did not talk "down to me" and
answered all my questions. Dr. Steward wanted to make sure I was well informed. He stressed the importance of support before
and after surgery. He stated that counseling is usually a must because of all the physical and psychological changes a WLS
patient and family goes through. My sister went to the appointment with me and Dr. Steward eased some of her fears. I feel
comfortable with Dr. Steward and was impressed with his ability to communicate. He was very honest about the number of
surgeries he has done (at this time under 20) and the risk of complication. Dr. Steward and Dr. Bernstien always work at a team
when doing WLS.

Last night was the WLS support group meeting in Topeka. Dr. Steward was there and he was much more
relaxed and had a smile for everyone. He came in to the meeting late and was called out once when his
pager went off. Dr. Steward had a visual presentation for the support group. It was a wonderful and had
great information. Dr. Steward has quite a sense of humor and had everyone in the room laughing more
then once. Dr. Steward explained that him and Dr. Bernstien face some of the same prejudices as their
patients over WLS. Many other surgeons see WLS as an "unnecessary surgery for a non-disease". Dr.
Steward stated that the support group meeting are as much for the doctors as the patients. It gives
everyone a boost to keep going.

Dr. Steward came to see me before surgery. He had a surgeon visiting from Ireland with him and informed
me he would be watching the surgery. Dr. Steward was his usual friendly self and this really put my parents
at ease. After surgery when he and Dr. Dr. Bernstien spoke with my family they answered all the questions.
My dad seem quite impressed with Dr. Steward and my dad never likes any doctors. LOL Dr. Steward was
on call right after I had surgery. I do not see how he keeps up his schedule. I did see him each day I was in
the hospital and his PA also visited me daily. Dr. Steward was in touch with the nursing staff on my floor 2-3
times a day to check on his patients. I had the room across from the nurses desk and could hear them
talking to him. I went for my post-op appointment yesterday. Dr. Steward was gentle when he took out my
drain tube and always has time for my questions. He is a great doctor and also a great person. I would
recommend him highly.

My first impression of Dr. Steward was that he reminded me of a family member, so i felt comfortable with him immediately. His staff was very helpful and considerate, considering on my first visit i left my purse at home and had to fax them a copy of my insurance card. I can't say that there was any thing i didn't like about Dr. Steward. He is very open about the surgery and lets you know ALL the possible risks involved upfront. The aftercare program he suggests is in the book (A Complete Guide to Obesity Surgery), basically it's the bible for the surgery, if you are considering the surgery or are having it, GET THE BOOK!! I would say he's a wonderful doctor, though i have only seen him a couple times, i feel very confident about his ablitlies.

Dr. Steward is very thorough, and extremely friendly. He does not get irritated with the 20 questions game and takes time out of his own spare time to go to bi-monthly support meetings for the people he is and has helped. His staff is very friendly and helpfull over the phone, havent met them in person yet. He is very meticulous about after care, emphasizing on the diet and walking, and from what i hear he is a nervous nelly about his patients after the surgery. From what I can tell so far, he has an extensive after care program. He is verrrry forthright about the risks, odds and is open and honest about how many surgerys he has done, for how long and any complications he has run across so far. I would rate him as an excellent doctor and feel very confident so far. And i believe, surgical competence and bedside manner go hand in hand, they should be good at both in order to be a really good doctor.

Dr. Steward's specialty is laporscopic surgery. He has only been doing wls procedures for about 6 months.

My first appointment with him went well. He was friendly and informative and definately wants you to know exactly what is going on and that your life will forever change if you elect to have the surgery.

There is a support group that meets twice a month and Dr. Steward, as well as another surgeon from his office attend all the meetings. The first hour of the meeting the Dr.'s go over all steps of the surgery with slides and handouts. They tell about the possible complications and risks, and answer all questions. The second half of the meeting is focused on post-ops sharing their experience, before and after pics, and generally answering any and all questions those of us considering the surgery have.

I meet with Dr. Steward again in about 3 weeks. Thus far I'm very comfortable with him and his abilities.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Steward at a mandatory support group meeting and my first impression of him rates very high. He was very honest in his presentation and encourages questions and input. I spoke to him for a few minutes and even though there were many people at the support group meeting, he gave me his undivided attention. At this point in my journey, I feel I have made the right choice in surgeons.

I had my first appointment with Dr. Steward this afternoon and felt very relaxed and at ease with him right away. He had a great sense of humor and took the time to get to know me as a person....not just a patient. He wanted to make sure I was completely informed of everything having to do with the surgery and was very clear about the risks of WLS. He emphasized the importance of learning everything I could about life after WLS I felt that he was very dedicated to his patients. I look forward to having him as my surgeon and would recommend him, at this point, to anyone considering WLS. There really isn't anything negative to say about him except that he did get "beeped" a couple of times during our appointment and had to leave the room 2 times. He never lost track of what we were discussing, though, and was only out of the room for 2 minutes at the most. Other than that, I felt he gave me his undivided attention.

Dr. Steward was nice right off the bat. He explained the surgery and risks to me. I felt very comfortable with him. His staff seemed very friendly. I have talked with his nurse, Maxine, a couple of times on the phone and she answered my questions patiently. I cannot say that I found anything to dislike about him in the 45 minutes I was in his office and I have heard good things from other patients about him. He is associated with a WLS support group meeting and stresses being involved with a support group. He talked about not pushing solids too soon after surgery. He did address the risks and that they are VERY real risks and can be VERY life threatening. He wants people to realize that problems can & do happen. At this point in my journey I would recommend Dr. Steward.

I first met Dr. Steward when he came to our WLS support meeting in Dec. 2001. He seemed very nice and talked to us and answered questions for 2 hours or more. He explained that he and his partner Bernita Bersten, MD were going to start doing LAP RNY's here in TOpeka starting late Jan or early February of 2002. Both partners are currently experienced thoraic surgeons for the Tallgrass Prairie Surgical Group. I made an appt for a consult with him for Jan 8,2002. His office staff are all new at the questions we WLS people ask. Im sure they will get to know the answers in time. I offered to be his first patient. Scarey, I know, but SOMEONE has to go first, don't they? I will post more AFTER I have the surgery, ok?
