Before I could get an appointment I had to attend the support group in Topeka. Mainly this is done so that patients will have a better idea about bariatric surgery. Once I had been to the meeting I called and got an appointment right away. My impression of Dr. Steward is that he was very caring. He answered all the questions I had. I told him of the problems that I had with the Live-Lite program of Junction City, KS not accepting BC/BS federal insurance any more due to the fact that Kansas BC/BS is the one that regulates how much is paid and at Live-Lite said BC/BS will only pay $6,000 for the surgery. Anyway, Dr. Steward said that since he doesn't just do bariatric surgery it wouldn't matter to him about what BC/BS will pay. He said that he was in this to help people live better lives. I was very impressed with his attitude. It's not often these days that you will find someone who will say that. After two weeks I contacted the office to see if my letter for approval had been sent to BC/BS. And sure enough it was "Faxed" to them. That impressed me as well. So I called BC/BS to check the status of the letter. The person I talked to there was very polite and told me that they had received the letter and it was being processed. She told me to call back in 10 days. That time frame is up day after tomorrow. I'm looking forward to finding out if they have approved my request.

My first impression of Dr. Steward was a great one. He was extremely kind. He was very professional and took time to fully understand my views and concerns. He told me that I was a good candidate for the surgery, was impressed that I was informed and educated about my decision, and told me what I could expect. He was honest and real!! My impression has only improved. He is still the best and I feel great about my decision and the choices I made. Dr. Steward made me very well infomred about all stages of the surgery, from the per-op visit to the follow-up visits and EVERY step between.
I would readily reccommend Dr. Steward to anyone who is thinking about having WLS. In fact, my sister has an appointment scheduled for tomorrow!!
Dr. Steward has both, surgical ability and bedside manner. I think both are important qualities and he excels in these areas.
I have not had any negative experiences!!!

Dr. Steward was very nice and accomodating to all my questions. It is important to him to have his patients well informed. He attends the support group meeting held at St. Frances Hospital. Meeting are held there twice per month and he goes to one per month. He feels that people will be more open and get more out of the meeting if he is not there sometimes. I'm not positive but I believe he requires his patients go to some of these meetings before he will schedule an appointment.
I was LAP RNY surgery number 6 for him for THIS TYPE of surgery. He is a skilled LAP and well respected general surgeon in the community. His office staff are great, and Dr. Bernsten (who assisted him during surgery) is also very good. They are very professional.
He was extremely attentive to any concerns I've had. He is a truly caring surgeon. He has a great sense of humor. My room mate in the hospital (a non gastric by pass patient) had a crush on him big time. :)
Dr. Steward is a nervous nelly and will double and triple check on you. When I was in the hospital he came in every morning and evening, and Dr. Bernsten came in at lunch. And their office nurse, Maxine (she is wonderful!) came in once per day too. That is in addition to the regular hospital staff! I felt VERY WELL cared for and feel that I couldn't have made a better choice, even though Dr. S was pretty new at these (at the time). Follow up care is proving to be very thorough.

My first impression was great he asked you to come to a class to learn about what it was you were going to under go then he asks you to come make an appointment with hem so we can talk one on one.My impression of hem only got betterand his staff are all so friendly almost as though you have known them your whole life. There was nothing not to like about hem. He is so into your post- op care H keeps a close eye on you for weeks after. I would have to say he gets a 9 in my book I would give hem a 10 but only God gets that one.

My first impression of Dr. Steward was that he seemed understanding. I was right! He is very kind and non-judgemental. I felt very comfortable talking to him and he answered all my questions without making me feel like I was wasting his time!! He is very thorough when explaining the risks of this surgery and the benefits of it. I am very happy that he is my doctor!! Good luck to all those who will have this surgery and know that you have a great doc! (As a side note: I really didnt have any bad feelings when I was with dr. steweard so I dont have anything negative to say about him)

I haven't actually met Dr. Steward yet. However, I have had quite a few questions about insurance coverage and things I can have done before my first appointment. Maxine has been very helpful giving me what information she can. My first appointment with Dr. Steward is April 15th. I am so excited!! I attended the support group meeting in Topeka with Brenda and Millie. They were wonderful. They didn't sugar coat anything. However, they didn't scare people away either. They just want to make sure you go into this with your eyes wide open. I have been very impressed with the comments I have heard about Dr. Steward so far. He sounds very competent and that makes me feel secure and sure about my decision. My husband even was impressed and he can be very skeptical. I'll let you know how it all went!!!

I had my consultation with Dr. Steward 1-6-03
He was very helpful! Answered all my questions that I had and then some. He encouraged me to continue attending the support groups. His office staff has also been very helpful and pleasant, Maxine is great!

I truly like Dr. Steward. He has a great sence of humor and has explained everything in detail. He takes the time to answer numerous questions and never makes me feel stupid with some of them. His office does seem to be very busy and it does take the office staff some length of time to return calls but they eventually do it. My surgery is scheduled for April 3, 2003 and I can't wait.

I was greatly impressed with Dr. Steward. I work for a Family Practice Dr. who is compationate and cares a great deal for his Pts. Dr. Steward gave me the same impression. He and his associates have helped many women. I hope I will be one of them.
Thank you,
Sherry Williams
