Dr. Ward and his associate Dr. McClean were incredible! They were so informative, understanding, and compassionate that I was immediately put at ease. So far, they have performed close to 1000 laproscopic gastric bypass surgies will very few complications and no deaths - I feel very confident that I am in "good hands." In addition, they have an incredible coordinator named Kate who handles everything - including having a shoulder to cry on, words of encouragement, tips and tricks, etc. - she is also a patient so she has been there and knows our struggles. I encourage anyone who is interested in this surgery in NJ or Eastern PA to see these two gentlemen! Finally, they have one of the most comprehensive "support" systems for post-surgery and due to the nature of the groups, their weight loss success rates are extremely high!

Dr Ward is the most caring Dr I have ever met. He took his time to explain the surgery to me on my first vist with him. His office staff is so nice. I had surgery June 22 ,2004 and Dr ward came to see before surgery and when I got out of the OR he was right there next to me. He is the best Dr and I would recommend him to anyone looking to have WLS. Call his office and ask for him. Dr Ward. He has the best bedside manner then any other Dr I went to talk with, he took his time with me and made me feel important. Thanks Dr Ward...

lap RNYGB by Dr. David Ward of Morristown, NJ.
It went flawlessly and I only had the least bit of discomfort for only a day or two. I highly recommend Dr. Ward. He is high tech and meticulous as a surgeon and during nutritional post-op follow-up, which he insists on. I had absolutely no complications, even had perfect "incision" healing, hardly any discomfort at all.
His Bariatric Coordinator Kate Fenimore is a psychiatric nurse and also one of his bariatric patients, so her knowledge and advice are the real deal. She was very helpful, makes herself very available, and visited me often, from right before entering surgery to recovery, to visiting me the two days I was in hospital.
Both great people and eminently proficient as they are caring. Highly recommended.
They say 100% perfect reviews are not credible, but as regards Dr. Ward and Kate, you can believe it. Even Dr. McLean, Dr. Ward's partner who specializes in the lap RNYGB and additionally the "lap band" is also a very friendly and impressive doctor, just from my interactions with him in the office while waitng to see Dr. Ward. They both are interested in answering your questions and sharing knowledge and are fun and nice besides.
Just make this "perfect review" more credible, the only negative I'll add is that: although you will find individual examples of very competent and friendly, efficient people at Somerset Medical Center, the hospital has deficiencies, and generally does not live up to the exemplary example you'll enjoy from Dr. Ward, Dr. McLean and Kate Fenimore the Bariatric Nurse Coordinator.
Best Wishes and Good Health!
These People are great!

Please realize that these statement are based on MY personal experiences with Dr. Ward and are in no way to replace your research and your decision in selecting a surgeon.

I first learned of Dr. Ward when I went to the Morristown Memorial Hospital orientation. I had actually gone to meet Drs. Abkin and Bertha, however, I was very put off by how they handled questions from the audience. Dr. Ward (and his partner Dr. McLean) we much more professional. After speaking with Dr. Ward I did some research on him and decided to have him do my surgery. I am having it done at Somerset Medical Center, Somerville, NJ.

My husband and I met with Dr. Ward and he patiently answered ALL of my questions (3 notebook pages full after extensive research and 2 family members who have had surgery).

Dr. Ward's after care is somewhat different from other post-op plans in that I will start with soft foods when I get home from the hospital. I was pleased with the follow-up program and the fact that he will give me his beeper number after surgery.

My surgery is scheduled for April 12, 2004 and I feel confident with having Dr. Ward perform the surgery.

The choice of a surgeon is EXTREMELY PERSONAL and I urge you to do your homework. While I believe Dr. Ward is the best surgeon for me, realize that your experiences may be different. Go into any meeting with the doctor aware of the procedure and its risks and make the decision that is best for you.

I was VERY UNHAPPY with my experience with Dr.Valeriu Andrei, the first surgeon I engaged. He came highly recommended, and has quite a loyal following. After attending the seminar, I met with him. He seemed caring and quite competent. He answered all questions and gave me a list of tests and evaluations to get. He also told me that he wanted me to lose 75 pounds before he would operate. I had the tests and evaluations, and was then hospitalized for edema. This hospitalization eventually resulted in open heart surgery. I lost 135 pounds while in the hospital. My surgeon and cardiologist both gave me the clearance to proceed with the bypass surgery and my edema was beginning to return. I wanted the bypass surgery as soon as possible. At that point, it became difficult to reach Dr. Andrei. He was on sick leave, he was re-scheduling surgeries, no one had any idea when new surgeries would be scheduled, and "check back next week." I kept asking for a surgery date, all to no avail. Finally, a member of his staff met with me and told me that Dr. Andrei wanted me to lose ANOTHER 75 pounds before he would operate. I asked that if I could lose 200 pounds that easily, why would I need Dr. Andrei? I decided that I was being strung along for too long a time (9 months and still no surgery date)and I wanted my file back so that I might obtain the services of another surgeon who would be more interested in performing the surgery. I had a heated discussion with his office manager who would not return my original file, only copies. She said she would waive the $1 per page copy fee (how offensive to be asked to pay for copies of my own property). I wanted my originals returned to me, which I obtained and hand delivered to Dr. Andrei. This request was refused. I was then threatened with libel if I told anyone what an unpleasant experience I had. I am still waiting for my files. I am persuing another surgeon, having wasted 9 months of my life with Dr. Andrei. I was also threatened with a lawsuit when I said that I would post my experiences on the internet. What I have said here are my own personal impressions of my own personal experiences and I am making no statements about what other people may experience. UPDATE 11/28/03
I found a GREAT surgeon, Dr. David Ward, out of Morristown & Somerset Med. Ctr. I am now 2 weeks post-op. No complications, and I have lost 50 pounds. Dr. Ward is a talented, caring surgeon, who deals with you himself. Call him @ (973) 267-6400. You will be glad you did.
UPDATE: I am now 8 weeks post-op. I have lost 75 lbs. and getting healthier every day. I feel great and owe it all to Dr. Ward, who continues to be deeply involved in your recovery. The support group newly formed is a big help in the process.

I just met Dr. Ward and Dr. McLean yesterday 9/20/03. They had a free seminar at Somerset Medical Center. Dr. McLean went through the power point presentation and Dr. Ward answered questions at the end. Dr. McLean is older I'd say in his 50s and Dr. Ward is in his 30's. They both are very knowledgable. The things that impressed me most about them was that as they have been doing the surgery 4 years in Morristown and now nearly a year at Somerset, as they find things that can improve the procedure they incorporate that in the process. For instance, since blood clotting is a risk for obese patients on the table during the operation, they now use boots on the legs that inflate and deflate to keep the blood moving.
Also to minimize the risk of leakage in the area where the intestine is attached to the now small section of the stomach, after the surgery is complete, they send down, through the throat, and endoscopy that is able to inflate the pouch and check for leaks. This is much that same concept as checking for leaks in an inner tube. If they see any suspicious areas they can reinforce the staple right then.
Regarding office staff: Kate is WONDERFUL. So supportive and encouraging. She herself recently had the surgery and is so thrilled to be helping others. She took the time to get to know everyones name, greeted you like she has known you a long time. Just great.
After care is very much emphasised. You definately get the impression that these people are going to follow you and be there for you. Their website is www.alliedsurgical.org
The risks of surgery are addressed. They are really not gone over in depth, but this is an overview so in your consult I am sure people get into risks more in depth.
Over all I rate them a+ so far. I will keep posting as I continue. I have a consult on October 13th at 3. Seeya later.

Dr. Ward is Great! He has such a nice bed side manner. I met him after having going to another surgeon and he was the one choosen for me and my husband. He listen to our questions and answered them truthfully always keeping our feelings in mind. He treats me like a sister and you can see he cares about what he does. He was at my bedside everyday and his smile and support was wonderful. His staff is very nice and they complete paperwork timely and call you back when you leave messages for them. Anyone considering this surgery should know they are in good hands with Dr. Ward. I have recommened him to several people who have inquired about the surgery.
