First Impression: Very kind man, he asked me if i had any more questions. He let me voice my thoughts and concerns.

Office staff: Very helpful

Aftercare: Very important, you have to go to a friends meeting, after you have been to one, you'll want to keep going for the peer support. The diet is very important and they never stop stressing how vital it is to your success.

Risks: Very clearly laid out

Rating: So far Id give him a A+. Expect to wait a few months for thing to move, he is a very busy man. No doubt because he is so good at what he does.

Dr Scholten is a warm, loving person. He is very encouraging right from the begining. His office staff is top of the line. Very professional and yet warm and friendly.
Dr. Scholten has an entensive aftercare program set up, including monthly support meetings, regular meetings with him, he even had staff research the best vitamins for us to take post-op. Easy to absorb. (I now sell them if anyone is interested).
When I found out that he teaches this surgery to other doctors, that impressed me even more.

He was very open about the bad parts of the surgery. He has a long list of possible problems.

I would rate him 100% in everything right now. Of course, I'm only 6 days out.

I think Dr. Scholten is the greatest!!
I even got bold enough one day to ask him if he was a Christian and he is. He said that he and his wife pray for his patients every day for 2 weeks surrounding their surgery.

Dr. Scholten impressed me with his knowledge and to the point approach. His office staff is wonderful..incredibly helpful and friendly.

Now I am post-op, and I still feel the same way about Dr. Scholten and his staff. I never felt rushed or that a question I had was silly. They are prompt, helpful, and most of all friendly. I am incredibly grateful to them. Before surgery, all the risks were explained to me in a way I could understand, and all my questions were answered. The aftercare they provide is wonderful..they make sure you have a detailed eating plan. There is also a wonderful support group of Dr. Scholten's patients once a month, in several different areas of the state. Impressive!

I have not met Dr Scholten yet. I attended the orientation meeting in his office and received alot of helpful info about what I needed to do to make this happen.

I had my first orientation with Dr. Scholten's office on August 1, 2001. The first person that I had any contact with was Anne. To this day I cannot tell you what her position is at that office, but she the one who set up my orientation meeting. I can only say that in talking to her for 30 seconds makes you feel incredible. She is so caring and compassionate. That put my mind at ease instantly. I live in Detroit, but I picked Dr. Scholten because of the comments that I had read about him, and his office on this website. I knew I was picking one of the best.
Dr. Scholten is very conservative when it comes to this surgery. You need to gather all of your medical records, have a psychiatric evaluation, and go to a support group meeting before you can even be scheduled to meet him. At first I thought that was ridulous to have to go through all of that, but I am thankful now. They want to make sure that you know exactly what to expect. The support group meeting was the most helpful. I set up my meeting with Dr. Scholten in October, and the first available appointment wasn't until February 6, so it was a bit of a wait.
I met Dr. Scholten on February 6th. They started something new that day. There were 5 of us that met with him as a group. He addressed the surgery, what to expect, what it does, how it works, risks, safety, and aftercare, to the group. We were required to take notes so we could take it home and review it. He explained the very structured aftercare, and follow up visits that are required. He was an incredibly nice man, and very professional.
After the group meeting, we broke off individually to meet with him. My husband and I both met with him. He reviewed my medical records, and answered questions. I really don't have much to say about him, or his program because I knew exactly what to expect beforehand. I knew he was conservative, expects you to lose weight before the surgery, is adament about aftercare, etc, before I met him. I had also been to Bariatric Treatment Center prior to chosing Dr. Scholten, so I have that experience to compare with. My insurance wouldn't cover at BTC, which is why I switched to Dr. Scholten, but I am very happy that I did.
I have not had the surgery performed yet. I just got my insurance approval, so I will come back to update afterwards. So far, however, Dr. Scholten and his staff are wonderful. Anne and Amy (who handles the insurance) are so professional and caring. Amy is right there to help with all insurance questions and help you with your approval. She is amazing. So far they have all made this experience a positive one. I look forward to the rest of the journey.

1st impression: Quiet, polite, friendly. Over time I saw how busy he was and felt he didn't really want to spend much time with patients post-op. He considers the surgery his business and I'm sure he is a very competent surgeon. But for the most part he leaves the post-op experience to others. Office staff is pleasant, but rushed. He has support groups that meet in various places. He is not at the groups, except on occasional visits. They are run by patients who have had the surgery. Overall, I have no qualms about his skills as a surgeon and his bedside manner prior to surgery was comforting. I did not see him in the hospital after surgery because he went on vacation, so just prior to being put under for the WLS was my only time to see his "bedside manner."

very knowledgeable and frank with his information on my first visit.
I am going to my second appointment in another week. His staff and others he
sends you to are well organized and helpful with any questions or needs you have.

I found Dr. Scholten to be a very knowledgeable man and easy to talk with. He was willing to listen to my concerns and fears! His staff is wonderful. His office appears to run like a well oiled machine that takes time to help where ever necessary.
Because I have only visited there twice I don't have the ability to answer a lot of the questions asked here. Based on many years of experience dealing with different types of Dr.s I was impressed with the over all information I have recieved. I will
continue to update this as I go along. Support from others in the same boat is one of the most valuable tools I know of outside of the medical part of all of this.

Doctor Don was great. Showed me exactly what is gonna happen in surgery. Told me how things will CHANGE in my way of looking at food.
His staff has been extremely helpful since the first time I called. Friendly and patient, even when I was frazzled at how things were going. Always answered questions I had.

Dr. Scholten is THE best surgeon around. He goes above and beyond the call of duty. His patients go through pre op programs, and post op programs and recovery. You live the guidelines he established and succeed.
