I don't write blogs/posts very often but just wanted to give a shout out to Dr. Alvarez he is great. I had my WLS surgery on November 3rd 2008 and have lost 85lbs so far I'm still loosing about 2-3 lbs a week. My diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol are all gone the only pills I take now are vitamins. Living in San Antonio I have been to Mexico before and I have been to Eagle Pass many times to play slots at the casino so I was not that scared to go have my surgery done in Mexico. Some people think that Mexico is a scary place and would never consider going to have surgery in Mexico but you really have nothing to worry about. The hospital was on the older side but was ok. I felt safe the entire time I was in Mexico. Dr. Alvarez was great a very nice person and you can really tell that he loves what he does. His staff was great to they all seemed very concerned with my comfort. They nurses all wear the old school nurse uniforms like they wore in the U.S. in the 60’s and 70’s it was cute. I totally recommend Dr. Alvarez if you are considering WLS in Mexico. I’m not the greatest writer so feel free to contact me if you want to chat about Dr. Alvarez or any part of the process.. Thanks Dr. Alvarez you truly changed my life..

My first impression was he is a warm caring person. It was a lasting impression that only improved over time. His office staff (Susan) is wonderful and super helpful and supportive. The thing I like least about Dr. Alvarez is that he is so far from my home and that I cant take him with me. He is the BEST. Future patients should know that he is extremely caring and talented. You are in the best hands when you are with him and his team. VSG really doesnt require aftercare, aside from home care, which you are given all you will need for at home, as well as direct access to him if you have any questions or problems. The only after care you really need, besides following the home medication instructions is to follow the diet, and that is strongly emphasized how important it is for your success and safety to follow it. The risk are addressed before you even get to MX and you always have your questions answered. I can not possible give him an over all rating high enough because to me he IS that great. His surgical competence and bedside manner are fantastic and more doctors should be like him. Its nice to be treated like a person instead of just another body to treat and paycheck to cash. I honestly do not have anything negative to say. I got to meet Dr. Alvarez twice. My first attempt at surgery was a bust. I had undiagnosed sleep apnea, there were complications during intubation. To play it safe they stopped with the procedure. Some might say they could have forced my through it. One of my dr.s in the states even said that. In my opinion, I am glad he chose the safe route and valued my safety over getting the job done. These were my experiences and impressions and I only wish the best experience for anyone else going through the VSG procedure with Dr. Alvarez. rnrn

I have to start off by saying that I hate doctors! Before going to Dr. Alvarez for my VSG I had not been to a doctor in 9 years. I was not overjoyed with the idea of going to Mexico either. Boy was I WRONG!!! I had the most amazing time in Mexico and would actually love living there. The hospital is located in the most quaint and charming little city. Dr. Alvarez is not like any other Doctor I have ever met. I was surprised to find that he has almost no accent at all, even though he is a Mexican surgeon. The man is wonderful! He is kind, honest and very educated without being arrogant. I will; and have referred many people to him for these types of surgeries. I doubt they could find a more brilliant surgeon in the US.

Dr. Alvarez was everything that I expected him to be and more..Thanks to all of you who helped me stay informed as to what to expect with my surgery in Mexico and from the dr. I absolutely loved Dr. Alvarez and everyone on his staff. I feel that I recieved better care there in Mexico than i could have gotten in my own country. Dr. Alvarez is a very caring and sincere experienced surgeon. He checked on me several times a day and has excellent bedside manner. I will admit that the hospital was alittle older but that was of no concern to me whatsoever!! It was clean and had all the up to date equip. that any hospital here in the US would have. Dr. Alvarez answered all my questions to the fullest and I am totally satisfied with my care and my choice of Dr.and I have absolutely no worries as he did a fantastic job.

Everything I read about him was true and my impression of him only improved the more time we spent with him. Future patients should know that his intentions for you are only for the best. His aftercare is straightforward and easy to understand. He stresses to contact him with any questions or concerns after the surgery no matter how insignificant your questions might seem to be. He wants to know that everything is OK. In his aftercare instructions he relays that following the liquid diet is imperative to avoid risks and to achieve your goals. His bedside manner is is just as superb as his competence as a surgeon.

What I would like to say, that every one of Dr. A's patient's also says, is that he & his team are awesome. I must emphasize it is a family atmosphere in this hospital, and not ever do you feel \"not cared for\" in any way.rnIf you are considering VSG...look no further than Dr. A. because he is the best in Mexico!rnNo problems with pain, communication, or travel to & from. You will feel pampered from the minute you get picked up in SAT and thats how it stays until you leave SAT for home!rnGod Bless you & your family of helpers Dr.A!

I just returned home yesterday from surgery with Dr. Alvarez and I feel wonderful. In fact, it's hard to believe I had surgery at all (but I know I did because I've seen my tiny little stomach on x-ray!). Dr. Alvarez and his entire staff are just the BEST. All of them are genuinely warm and caring people who are quick to respond to your needs. Dr. Alvarez is wonderful – technically very skilled, informative, warm, funny, and very down to earth, as is Dr. Gabe. Christina is the wonderful day nurse and she speaks great English. The night nurses do not speak much English, but they try very hard to communicate and are all very sweet. Rosy, the van driver, is funny and warm and marvelously reassuring. Susan is an outstanding coordinator. She always answered my e-mail questions or phone calls right away, and I felt like she truly knew what it was like to be in my shoes. If I could, I'd pack them all up and move their practice to the States to show doctors here how good surgical care can be.
