My first visit with Dr. Harry Sax at Strong Hospital I knew he was the right doctor for me. He did and said something that for me showed he cared for me as a real person a human being. He showed me compassion and respect. Something I had never experienced from a doctor before.(I'm sure he does not realize what he did and it still brings tears to my eyes when I think about it. I hope to share it with him someday). Dr. Sax always took time with me during my visits. He is very knowledgeable and patient. His staff at Strong was great Maryann and Ellen were always ready to help.At my first visit and all my visits I was made aware of the risk of surgery. And at 500lbs. I knew I was a big risk. BUT I WAS READY. I told Dr. Sax If he would get me through the surgery (April 22, 03)I could do the rest. He did and now it is up to me. I'm so grateful that he ended up doing the duodenal switch.
October 21,05 I had my 30 month follow-up visit with Dr. Sax in RI. I traveled about 872 miles round trip. I left motivated and ready to reach my next weight goal.Wenda is very helpful and pleasant as is his other staff.

I think Dr. Sax is excellent in all areas. He is caring, compassionate, but straight to the point and very honest and direct concerning all aspects of the surgery. He has an excellent staff. The only slightly negative thing I can say is that he is very busy...but I guess that just shows that he is a trusted surgeon. I highly recommend him to anyone serious about the surgery.

Dr Sax was wonderful! I had my first appointment with him and got a very comfortable feeling almost instantly. The staff at Strong could not have been any nicer.

DR. SAX WAS VERY PERSONALBE AND KNOWLEGEABLE ABOUT THE SURGERY. HE ASKED MANY POINTED QUESTIONS AND EXPECTED HONEST ANSWERS. NOT JUST OF ME BUT OF MY HUSBAND WHO ALSO ATTENDED MY FIRST SESSION WITH HIM. HE MAKES IT VERY CLEAR THAT THIS IS A LIFE CHANGING CHOICE AND WANTS TO MAKE SURE YOU MAKE A VERY INFORMED DECSION. HE REQUIRES THE USUSAL PSYCH EVAL BUT ALSO REQUESTS THAT YOU ATTEND A SUPPORT GROUP MEETING AND DO A LOT OF RESEARCH ON YOUR OWN. HE CHECKS TO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW JUST WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO YOU AND WHAT CHANGES YOU NEED TO MAKE IN YOUR LIFE. HE IS VERY UPFRONT ABOUT THE DANGERS OF THE SURGERY AND ISN'T ALL HEARTS AND FLOWERS ABOUT THE OUTCOME ( NO, IT IS VERY UNLIKELY YOU WILL LOOK LIKE CINDY CRAWFORD WHEN YOU'RE DONE BUT YOU WILL BE HEALTHIER). THE ONLY THING THAT BOTHERED ME WAS THAT I STARTED THIS WHOLE PROCESS A YEAR AGO AND I CALLED TO MAKE MY FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH HIM IN AUGUST AND COULD NOT GET IN UNTIL THE END OF JANUARY.( I PROBABLY JUST HIT A REALLY BUSY TIME). AFTER THAT THE APPOINTMENT WAIT TIME WAS FAIRLY REASONABLE.

*Dr. Sax is a young doctor but my first impression was how down to earth he is. He was very concerned that I completely understand the surgery. He also places a great deal of emphasis on patients having support.

*His office staff is great, especially his nurse Ellen. They answer questions and phone calls in a through friendly manner. They make me feel proud of myself and they are truly proud of me too!

*All risks were addressed in my first appointment and in a packet mailed to my home prior to my consultation.

*In my oppinion, Dr. Sax and his staff are wonderful. My experience with them has been a positive one.

*My only aside is that I need a revision and Dr. Sax does not do them, however, no Rochester surgeons do them.

Post Op comments: Dr. Harry Sax has been very encouraging and supportive. I have made friends with 2 of his patients, Gail and Jahn. We have a nickname for Dr. Sax. Dr. Harry "Houdini" Sax, because he makes our fat disappear! Thanks! Harry, you're the best!

Pre-Op comments:

My surgeon is Dr. Harry Sax from Rochester, NY. My first impression of him was that he was very busy, all business, but dedicated and professional. During my second visit, he was busier than ever, but when it was my turn to see him, he seemed more personable, caring, and focused on me as a person than my first visit. We actually got a few laughs in during the 2nd visit and that always puts me at ease.

He allowed me to ask lots of questions and he answered them all to my satisfaction. He appears to be a very skilled and competent surgeon. He told me he would be seeing me several times during the first year after my surgery, but then I think the aftercare drops off after that. He does plan to have me back later to repair an incisional hernia when I am ready to have a tummy tuck. He puts you in the driver's seat to get most of your WLS info. and support you need because, let's face it, he doesn't have time to spend with each of us like that. And really, it's up to us to take control of our WLS, not him.

His office staff were courteous and friendly. His right hand office lady, MaryAnn, is a wonder woman with the patience of Job!

If I had to say anything critical, it's
the long wait to see him and the long wait afterwards to have the surgery. But, WLS has really exploded these past few years and the surgeons can only see so many people at a time. I know in the end, it's worth the wait, but my life has been in limbo waiting to have WLS, and that is stressful and leaves me feeling anxious. Trying to stay positive and "pumped" for a major surgery like this takes a lot of energy out of you.

I am waiting for my insurance approval before I can set my surgery date, so I will have to wait until post-op to share anything more about Dr. Sax. But, overall, I like him and trust him to take good care of me, and I can't wait to get started living life on the "losing" side!
