My first impression of Dr. Doxey was that he is very professional and pleasant and that impression has not changed. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful - from the front desk staff, to the nurse, to the insurance person.

The only negative thing about the visit was that my height is an issue - they checked it with my shoes on and I didn't speak up until after we were already in the room. It didn't get rechecked, just 1/4" taken off and I'm still not convinced that is completely accurate.

Future patients might want to know ahead of time that he is efficient with his time and doesn't piddle around. I didn't necessarily feel that he rushed me, but the visit wasn't long at all. I think some might be put off by that if they didn't know to expect it up front. But he definitely takes time to explain and let you ask all the questions you want.

He has rules about aftercare and emphasizes the importance of daily vitamins, proteins and avoiding foods that are not healthy or may cause dumping.

I think he does have a structured aftercare program that includes a group, but since I live several hours away I can't possibly be included in that. He did give me a good idea of what to expect post-op.

He had a sheet listing all of the risks of surgery and the chances of each. He went down the list and explained them all one by one.

Overall, I feel confident having Dr. Doxey as my surgeon. Surgical competence seems to be his strong point, but bedside manner isn't lacking. Of course, I have only had my consultation so far, I'm sure I'll have a firmer take on this after the surgery has actually happened.

I met Dr.Doxey today (3/11/02) and my first impression was that he is very friendly. He was so laid back that I was instantly comfortable talking to him. Our consult was kinda short to me that may be because I was already well informed upon going to the consult, I think he was kinda impressed that I had done my homework. He explained everything to me and answered all my questions. I knew that there were others in the lobby waiting for him but he didnt rush me one bit, I liked that. The staff was just as kind and considerate. I had read here that they were a big family and I agree with that. They all work so well together. I would recomend Dr. Doxey to my friends and family. I was a little nervous at first but not now, I know I am in good hands...

My first impression of Dr. Doxey was a positive one. He sat down with my husband and I and answered every question that we had. He is very easy to talk to. His staff(the ones that I had to interact with) were very nice. Vanessa is one of the nurses and you feel like you have known her for years right away. Pat who is one of front office staff has been exceptional since the first time I called for an appointment and that has not changed. He explains from beginning to end what the procedure will entail and what changes you have to make. He did not try to persuade me one way or the other, but did let me know all the positive and negative aspects of what "we" are about to do. Overall my experience was a positive one. We are now just waiting for approval from Aetna. I know that my surgery will be sometime in April, but until we get the approval, I won't know the exact date.

Dr. Doxey had been my daughter's surgeon earlier in the year so I felt confident with his ability.

I had a minor set back after being released from the hospital and had to go through the barium test again. We live 5 hours from where I had the surgery done but Dr. Doxey called my home the next night to be sure I was ok.

Vanessa and Susan M in his office are God-sends! Very helpful and supportive.

I first met Dr. Doxey about 4 years ago. I found him genuinely concerned about treating obesity, and easy to speak with. Although my insurance still has a written exclusion, I have not given up hope, and am getting more determined than ever to become one of Dr. Doxeys sucess stories. When I saw Dr. Doxey I found he explained the surgery in ways I could understand. He took the time to tell me exactly what would be done, and what I would need to do. I will be self-paying

Dr. Doxey appears to be an awesome man. I've only met him once for the initial consultation. He was informative, caring, nurturing and patient. I asked a page full of questions and he painstakingly answered all of them. When he couldn't answer one he was able to refer me to people who could.
He is so involved in this surgery that he set up a support group that have over 60 people coming monthly. I was overwhelmed at the support meeting by the people who have had surgery by him and are in love with his bedside manner.
My impression of the office was that it was "swanky". More than the physical surroundings, the people ( who I initally judged by appearance) are wonderful. The receptionist, Susan, is a loving and caring woman who made me feel instantly accepted. The insurance woman, Melissa, is the same way. She will help and answer any questions that arise. I was a bit taken aback by Dr. Doxey's nurse, Susan M., but then it was only one time and I was nervous. I am also a bit afraid of Teresa, the woman who schedules the surgery. Maybe that's because I just want questions answered and she is so busy that I may appear a pain to her.
Dr. Doxey says he will see me, after surgery, as many times as I feel the need, but definitely weekly after the surgery for the first month then monthly after the first 4 months. That was important to me, as I didn't want to be left hanging.
Future patients may want to know that he is becoming extremely popular and difficult to get in to see. If you are thinking of having the surgery done lap, I'd call now to make an appointment.
As for surgical competence and bedside manner: I really need both. We are doing the surgery at Va. Beach General because he likes the team there best. I want him to feel as comfortable as possible since I am going to be "cut". As for bedside manner. I am a people person...I need to connect with a person before I can trust them. He is easy to connect with.

Dr. Doxey was a very caring, easy to talk to person. He took about an hour with me to tell me all about the surgery and answer my questions. He seemed impressed that I was well informed prior to my visit, thanks to obesityhelp.com. His staff was wonderful to work with and were speedy to get my appointments set up for surgery and testing.

I was finally glad to meet a dr. that did this kind of surgery. I became very confident in his abilities through my discussions with him and by going to the support group meeting and talking to more of his patients. The office staff is wonderful. They will help with any small detail. There wasn't anything that I didn't like about him. Future patients need to know that he and his staff are there whenever you need them. Talk to them, ask questions. Tell them what you think. Followup care is very important to them. They are there to answer any and all questions or address any problems and most of all for support. Yes, there is an aftercare program and that is gone over before the surgery and again before you go home from the hospital.Risks of the surgery are addressed and listed on the hand out that is given out both on the initial visit and on the final visit before the surgery. I would give him a rating of 9.5. Both surgical competence and bedside manner are great. Of course, each individual is different, and results vary, but I went into the wls experience with a positive attitude. The only thing I was unhappy with was the wait time. I first met with Dr. Doxey In Dec. 1999. It took until Oct. 2000 to get the insurance co. approval. But, even that had a silver lining. By Oct. 2000, Dr. Doxey was doing the wls laproscopically.

Dr. Doxey is the BEST!!!! (I know we all say that about our Dr, but mine really is). He sat down with me and took the time to answer all my question and even ask some of his own. He explained and went over EVERYTHING with me and made sure I understood. I would highly recommend him to others. I had my surgery 1 1/2 months ago and have seen him 3 times already and have another appt. set up. So I would say his aftercare is good.
Melissa and Susan M. in his office are GREAT!!! I called there so many times and talked to both of them and they never acted like I was bothering them. (Even though I know I was).
The only thing I didn't like was the wait to see the Dr. once you get there, but if you think about the quality of care and time that he gives to each patient I guess it is understandable.
Over all I would give him and 9 1/2.
