My first impression of Dr. Maquire is that he really does care about the problems that Morbid Obesity cause both physically and mentally. He offers half day group information seminars. This was very helpful and he answered everyone's questions, plus he had 2 guests that had both had WLS by him. That was very informative. He has a well layed plan for this life changing tool to permanent weight loss. He addressed all of my concerns about the procedure and the risks involved. I feel that I will be well taken care of by Dr. Maquire for the rest of my life.
10/30/01 I just want to add what a wonderful surgeon Dr. Maguire is! And his whole staff.
1/17/02 Dr. Maquire is no longer accepting United Medical. Fortunately, my insurance says Benesight (even though they go through UM).

I first met with Dr.Maguire on December 14, 2001 for his informational session. My family Dr. had recommended him. I felt comfortable with him and his office, but I really don\'t know much about him personally yet, except to say that he seemed a very honest and sincere man. He explained everything in great detail and my husband was very impressed. I\'ll add more later after I meet him one to one.

I liked Dr. Maguire from the start, he is very intellegeint and very kind. Dr. Maguire truly believes that he is making a differance in our lives, and believe he is. The staff at Dr. Maguires is just great, always friendly and reasuring, and best of all theres no lip service there, when they talk toyou about the surgery they really do know what they are talking about because at least some of them have had the surgery and the others have supported the ones who have had it, makes you feel great knowing that they've been here before me.
I would recommend this surgeon and his staff to everyone.

<p>
I've researched several surgeons in the Greater Dayton area, and the one that kept coming to the top of the list was Doctor John Maguire. I chose him because I was unable to find anyone who had a bad experience with him or his staff. So far, my personal assessment would agree with that. Of course, this is my personal experience... your "mileage" may vary. :)
<p>
After my initial (group) consultation with him, my impression is that he is quite knowledgeable and seems thoughtful and sensitive to those who are morbidly obese. He's also been doing gastric bypass surgeries for over twenty years, and I definitely wanted an "experienced hand" to do my surgery.
<p>
Doctor Maguire's staff has also been very wonderful. Everyone is very friendly. Kim is the person who handles the insurance processing, and she has made me feel that I am the only patient that she's handling!
<p>
Both Doctor Maguire and many of his former gastric bypass patients emphasize the aftercare program. They stress the fact that it is critical to the patient's continued success, and I'm confident that I'm in good hands. My experience with this surgeon is everything that I'd hoped for so far!
<p>
Of course, I will update this report as I time goes on, particularly after my surgery.
<p>
11/12/2001 UPDATE: My surgery date was moved forward by three days! I was told that this was because Dr. Maguire needed to be out of town around the last day I would be in the hospital. He apparently does not like to be away with patients still in the hospital. Shifting my date forward will allow me to get out of the hospital and be home for the weekend before he'll be gone. To me, this whole event indicates a level of thoughtfulness and caring that makes me even more glad I chose Dr. Maguire for my surgeon.
<p>
12/11/2001 UPDATE: I had my lab tests done on the 6th of December at the hospital where the surgery will take place. All in all, it was not that bad an experience. There was ultrasound imaging done on my stomach and gallbladder, two chest X-rays, an upper G.I., a urine sample collected, several blood tests, an E.K.G., some arterial blood gas work, and some pulmonary tests/excercises. Of course, I had to run through my personal and family medical history a few times, too!
<p>
After the tests, I had a physical performed by Dr. Maguire. It was not much different than the initial examination done by a family physician on your first visit: I went through my family and personal medical history with a medical assistant, and she also went over a pre-surgery checklist of "do's" and "don'ts", the consent form that I had to sign, and a breakdown of what I will/can/shouldn't eat following the surgery (immediately after and for the first three months following).
<p>
After that discussion, Dr. Maguire performed a physical examination... listened to my chest, checked my pulse, checked the glands in my neck, and showed me where (and how big) my incision would be. He then fielded all of my questions (I had about five), and that was it!

My surgeon is wonderful. He is very straight forward and to the point. He and his staff are very through with any information you may need. Before surgery they took care of all my insurance issues and it so easy. After surgery they have provided such a wonderful support system. I have a nurse that I can call if I have any question no matter how trivial. I also love the fact that I see Dr. Maguire on my doctor visits and not an assistant. Future patients should know that they will get excellent care and wonderful instruction. However he will be very honest in what is expected of you and what you as the patient need to be doing after surgery, for example diet and excercise. I would rate him 95% The only thing I can think of for room of improvement is at times he could have a little bit better bedside mannor. As far as risks of surgery he did a wonderful job. We had to go to a class for four hours where he went over in detail the two surgies he does the risk of both. It also covered insurance sessison that was very informative. We also got to talk to people who have had the surgery.

I went to Dr. maguire's seminar on 8/06/2001 and thought he was very thorough about the surgey from beginning to end. He seemed very truthful and to the point.
His office staff seemed friendly and understanding;
He seems to stess that after care is very important for lifetime results. I will do as he instucts me.
He was very frank about the risks 0f the surgery.But an 0.5 risk sounds better than some of the other surgeries that are out there.
I read that he has a good bedside manner and is very competent. I'll get back to you on that. Because I'm the worse when it comes to anything medical. I have a terrible fear.
Hopefully he'll be able to handle me because I need this operation to save my life.
I'll write more as this journey continues.

Attended Dr. Maguire's information seminar about a month ago. It took me 5 months to get that appointment! I was very impressed with him. He was so compassionate and spoke candidly about the problems of the obese. He did not think my insurance (UHC) would cover this surgery, even though UHC told me that it would be covered if medically necessary. His group of surgeons have decided not to renew their contract with UHC. Their current contract runs through Dec 31st. He did offer to come in on one of his scheduled days off to do my surgery if I could get it approved. His staff was very kind and welcoming, and quick to return my calls. He stressed the importance of follow up and support group meetings.
