My first impression of him was that he is very serious about what he does. He seems a little shy talking to a crowd of people. But completely sincere. He is matter-of-fact and doesn't mince words. He is extremly concerned with aftercare which I consider an incredible asset. I feel very confident and assured with him.

My first impression was that he has very little "bedside manner." He is strictly business. But, I have done my research and have found him to be the most competent surgeon in my area. I've spoken with and personally know several of his patients, and they have nothing but good things to say about him. So I am confident in his abilities.
His staff is very pleasant and helpful and his office emphasizes aftercare.
He conducts a few informational sessions each month. It took me three months to get an appointment for that session. But, it was very informative and he addressed each question asked. One of his staff members had the BPD surgery and was available to answer questions regarding that, but at my info session there wasn't anyone who had had the Roux-en-y, which is what I'm having done.

At the information session that Dr. Maguire requires, I was very impressed with his candor and honestly. He did not fudge in giving you the negative information on this surgery along with the positive. I feel as though I was very lucky to find this man to do the surgery for me. He is clearly very concerned about the welfare of his patients and seems very willing to work with them for years after the surgery to make sure they get the results they want. He provides a support group which meets monthly and he urges you to attend the meetings if at all possible. Both Dr. Maguire and his office seem very willing to answer any questions you have at anytime. He seems well versed in this surgery and appears to really know what he is doing and what you need to do. I would not hesitate to recommend him to all of my friends should they need this surgery. I personally would prefer surgical competence to bedside manner and I do not doubt that he is extremely competent. As far as bedside manner goes, he seems to be a no-nonsense type person. He listens to your questions and answers them directly, but does not spend a lot of time chitty-chatting. This is fine with me as I was not looking for a new best friend, but rather a competent dependable surgeon I could count on. I think in Dr. Maguire, that is just what I found.

I attended a 3 hour informational meeting with Dr. Maguire and his staff on 3/22/02. They all seemed very nice. The information was straight forward and not full of "fluff". I look forward to having a one on one meeting with Dr. Maguire, soon, and will update more at that time.
Being almost 3 months post op now, I can give a better view of Dr. M. He's WONDERFUL! This man really cares about you as his patient. He listens to your concerns and fears and is there with the answers to your questions. I would definitly recommend him to anyone!

My surgeon seems very nice and up front. I haven't had a one on one with him yet. The office staff is wonderful and helpful.I know two people who have had surgery with Dr. McGuire and havd done very well.Follow-up is something he stresses. There are support groups every month. Like I said, I haven't had the pleasure of working with Dr. McGuire personnaly, because my first appt. is in Nov. My surgery date is Nov 18 at 2:15

His name is Dr John McQuire of Dayton, Ohio.
He is fabulous. He has been doing bariatric surgery for 20 years and is the head of the department at Kettering Hospital. I am very confident with him and he is very informative in his pre-op sessions for new patients. His office staff is very good and helpful. I only find one fault with him he is very quite and does not mingle well with people. You really have to talk to him on a one to one basis. He says we are his patients for his or our lifetime. I think that was one of the things I really liked about him. He really cares about his patients. He has a schedule of appointments all included in his fee at time of surgery for aftercare. He tell all the ins and outs of the surgery especailly the riskes involved. I would rate him as excellent. His surgial competence is excellent I do not know about his bedside manner yet..

My first impression was that he really knew his business.
No my impression didn't change.
The office staff is excellent, and several have had bariatric surgery themselves.
The only thing I disliked was there was no initial one on one consultation, just a group session... but then I never asked for a one on one either so it may be available.
He's very compassionate.
Aftercare is stressed a lot, especially the first year, but also throughout the lifetime of the patient. The aftercare program seems very structured.
All the risks were addressed in the written material given out, and then he went over them at the group consultation.
So far I would rate him excellent.
Now that I'm post op I have to say that Dr. Maguire is absolutely AWESOME. He visited me in the hospital every day at least once a day. When I went in for my staple removal I actually saw and talked to Dr. Maguire and he personally removed the staples and drain (it's been my experience this is usually done by a nurse or tech) and none of it hurt in the slightest. He's quietly reassuring and really just has a presence that is comforting because it lets you know that he knows what he's doing and he's going to be sure you're doing okay.

I fully expected Dr. Maguire to be the quiet, reserved guy I so often hear him described as being. He in my opinion, is not like that. He is a very conscientious and thorough doctor who I have total faith in. I don't believe I have ever felt more comfortable with a doctor in my life and I feel I can truly be open with him and that he will listen to concerns and questions without making me feel brushed off.
Right before my surgery on 7/17/02 he came in to see me and at that time I swear I was about to have a panic attack. He was very comforting and told me it was okay if I wanted to back out. He answered a few last minute concerns I had and I totally felt at ease and needless to say he performed my surgery.
He saw me in the recovery room which I barely remember and he saw me several times everyday during my stay at the hospital which was 3 nights and 4 days. He really preaches to you about getting up and walking and doing your breathing exercises, which both really hurt doing because you are so sore. He also has a surgical resident named Dr. Williams who came in to check on me several times everyday too. He, like Dr. Maguire, has a wonderful bedside manner and seems to be very intelligent and knowledgeable in his field. I know he will make a very fine surgeon someday.
Before I left the hospital Dr. Maguire came in my room, sat down and explained all the things I needed to do and not do once I got home and even reminded me that having this proceedure can sometimes be very hard on the spouse because of their insecurities and that I needed to make sure I watched out for these things. He is very caring not just with the medical stuff but with the emotional well-being of everyone involved. You cannot go wrong with this guy, he's the best.
As for his office, I can't believe how busy they are and yet they still are so patient and kind when you have a question, no matter how insignificant it may be. Kim is the greatest there too. She is his nurse and you could never find a better replacement. She will stop whatever, she is doing and talk to you.
