Dr. Maguire is the best surgeon alive. He is awesome!! Dr. Maguire cares about his patients. He treats you as a person and not a number. His staff is equally careing. Kim (his nurse) is a sweetheart. I recomend him highly for anyone that is able to have him as their surgeon. I traveled from Louisiana to Ohio and will make the trip once a year for follow up appointments and it is worth it. Dr. Maguire is very insistant about your aftercare. His support group is the most involved one around, they truly know the meaning of SUPPORT. Dr. Maguire makes sure you understand all of the risk involved with surgery. I can't say enough about this man. To this date I have not had a bad or unpleasant experience with him or his staff. This has been my personal experience as a patient of Dr. John Maguire.

Dr. John Maguire is very soft spoken and his highly knowledgeable of the morbidly obese psyche. Because of him, my husband finally was able to understand what made me tick.
My impression could not improve. He's a 10!
Kim has the most patient contact. Kim is highly knowledgeable and answers all questions professionally. She is an excellent communicator.
Dr. Maguire has an excellent sense of humor, a sharp knife, and takes time to attend the support groups he sponsors.
Eight post-op visits the first year, followed by an annual check.
The structured care combines support group interaction with follow-up visits.
Risks were addressed up-front.
On a scale of 1-10, he's a 10!
All three are necessary and vital to surgical success. Dr. Maguire and his senior resident saw patients 2x daily/

Dr. Maguire is a good communicator (although reserved, he is direct and to the point); an excellent surgeon (based on my progress, to date); and seems to genuinely care about his patients' progress. His office staff is swamped but still manage to provide good customer service.
I also was impressed with the resident surgeon that assisted Dr. Maguire at Kettering Memorial Hospital and Dr. Maguire's associate, a Dr. Muth. Between the three doctors, I received more than ample attention during my hospitalization.
Dr. Maguire requires you to attend a 3-hour educational seminar that he gives with particular emphasis on risks. Surgical follow-up starts as monthly visits (with complete progress histories and blood work), evolving to quarterly then semi-annual and annual visits.
His office hosts two after-care groups, an RNY and Duodenal Switch; both groups meet monthly. His office also publishes a quarterly newsletter.

The only impression I can offer concerning Dr McGuire are my first ones. I have only been to his informational meetings which are held bi-weekly on Fridays. The meeting was very informative. There was a short "film", a few diagrams, one person to represent each type of surgery, and an open question and answer session. At first he was quite serious, but quickly showed his sense of humor when answering some of the questions. I will update as my experience unfolds.....

I attended Dr Maguire's group information session on Fri Feb 15, 2002. My personal/pre op consultation with him isn't until May 28, 2002. At the information session, Dr Maguire was very professional and quite informative. He stresses aftercare. He stayed until all questions had been answered. (Let me just say, he has more patience than I do because you could tell some of the folks had not done any research into WLS) Dr Maguire's nurse/assistant Kim is wonderful!

My first impression was that Dr. Maguire is a very knowledgeable person. He seems to be kind and understanding about people who are morbidly obese. I haven't met him in person yet but will do that on the 12th of March. Eight days later I will have my surgery if nothing happens. There was a little confusion about the dates I was to have appointments with the surgeon but I believe now that has been straightened out. Most of the staff are very helpful. They got all the required information for insurance together and it was sent into Anthem on a Friday and it was approved by the following Wednesday.

My first impression of Dr. Maguire was that I was very pleased. I admit I was a little worried from things I had heard or read about him on this site. Some say that he has no bedside manner and that he does not have a wonderful personality. I did not feel that way at all. I have not yet had the opportunity to have him as a surgeon, but I am eager to work with him. I have no doubt that he is a very capable surgeon and he is very interested in helping obese people. He is very knowledgeable in this field. To me that is what is most important. He is sensitive to individual situations and will answer any questions you might have. The medical staff is wonderful so far, and are also eager to help you. He emphasizes aftercare very strictly and believes it is very important. He is not afraid to address risks of the surgery, but reassures you that most complications can be taken care of. I cannot rate him overall at this point considering I have not had the surgery, but will let you know. I believe that bedside manner is important, but not as important as surgical competence, and if the surgeon has your best interest at heart that is enough bedside manner for me. I would trust Dr. Maguire wholeheartedly.
Dr. Maguire was an excellent surgeon, I trusted him with my life and he did a wonderful job. He was sensitive to my needs and informed me well on how things were progressing. He was very competent and I would recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Maguire is soft spoken and takes his surgeries very personal. He is sincere in wanting to help obese people. He emphasizes aftercare as a must and requires you to commit to a monthly meeting with him for LIFE.
Dr. Maguire held a 2 1/2 hour presentation covering all aspects of the RNY and BDP, including all advantages as well as the RISKS. He also has people on his staff that have had surgery and they were available for questions.
Dr. Maguire's nurse Kim, she's wonderful, she truly is his right hand "woman". She was very instrumental in getting my Insurance company's approval as well as sliding me into a cancelled surgery date.
The Kettering Hospital is a teaching facility, but Dr. Maguire is there the whole time, and he says that the residences will only help with the closing procedures and they MUST DO IT HIS WAY>>>>>>>.
