My first impression of Dr VerSteeg was that he was my knight in shining armor. I had never considered RNY before, and on a whim went to one of his seminars. He was totally upfront about the risks, as well as the benefits of the surgery. He fully explained everything to me every step of the way. I never felt "out of the loop", and if I had any questions, ANY of his staff were more than happy to help me out. One thing I was really impressed with was his surgical record, not only with gastric bypass, but his abdominal expertise overall. I saw him several times during my hospital stay, and feel he had a wonderful follow up program. I would not trust anyone with my life the way I did Dr VerSteeg. He literally gave me back my life! I know he will be dearly missed, and California residents are extremely lucky to not only a surgeon of his statute, but a man with his values and forthrighteousness as well! Good Luck DR~! We miss you!

My first impression was that he was very caring and protective toward his patients.

Unfortunately, my impression completely changed as soon as I was released from the hospital.
His staff (nurses)do the follow up appointments with the patients. They don't pass the information and problems on to him.
I tried and tried to see the Doctor for follow up because I was having problems but it wasn't until my husband called and literally yelled at them that I was able to see the Doctor. When I arrived to my scheduled appt I had to wait 2 hrs to see him.
He does not emphasize aftercare nor have a structured aftercare program.
He addresses the risks of surgery in a required/recommended support group but does it with listing nationwide statistics and showing that his statistics are far better. What I came to realize was that his stats are better because people go elsewhere for followup.
Overall, I rate him very poorly.

On the positive side, he does very well at getting people approved for the surgery with the insurance company.

I was very impressed with Doctor VerSteeg from the start. He was emphatic that this is a tool, not a cure-all. He was very easy to work with, and very supportive. The office staff was right there with you too, along the way, if you needed them. It was a very good experience all around, and I wish him luck at his new practice in California! Iowa will be losing a great surgeon!

when i first met Dr VerSteeg I thought he was a nice down to earth guy.He clearly explained the surgery to me, both pre op and post op, with no questions unanswered.Throughout my visits the doctors and staff provided me with complete support, before and after surgery.
Dr VerSteeg is a wonderful surgeon, I would recommend him for anyone considering this type of surgery. The aftercare program was also excellent. I thank them all very much for helping me to become a now healthier person.
If you are interested in having this surgery done make sure you do a thorough research before making a decision. The above is based on my personal experience, this does not reflect in any way how another person would react with having this surgery done.
Good luck on your journey!

Doctor VerSteeg really puts you at ease. He took time to explain the surgery and the risk that goes with it. I really think highly of him. His staff is fantastic, none better. They are always there to help. I have no complaints about any of them. Go with Doctor VerSteeg and his staff and you will be in the best of hands. The after surgery support group is great. Doctor VerSteeg goes all out to explain the surgery and addresses any questions that you may have. The after surgery bedside manner of Doctor VerSteeg couldn't be better. He was there for me.

Thanks Doc, your fantastic. So is Phyllis and the rest of your staff.

he was very upfront and told you the facts. from the good ones to the bad ones. he told you what to expect and what the long term outcome could be. very informative! I thought he was very nice and understanding. Very informational. My impression of him stayed about the same- he was very laid back and easy to talk to. His office staff was exceptional as well- all very very very sweet and caring people. I really didn't have anything about him that I didn't like. He emphasizes aftercare A LOT- which is great- I think more surgeons need to be like that from what I hear. Yes- support group, physical therapy, follow up visits. He was pretty blunt with the risks of surgery. I would rate him as a great and caring guy. The only thing I don't like about him is that in the post op visits- I never saw him at all- the nurse was great though. I think that surgical competence and bedside manner are equally important- maybe bedside manner a little more- but he was in frequently to check on me.

nothing yet! Phyliss is great though- she is the patient coordinater.

Dr. Versteeg is very nice. I really enjoyed speaking with him. It was very informative, I knew alot already but there is always room for more info.

This was by far the best thing I have ever done. Dr. Versteeg has a wonderful bedside manner and was very caring for me while int he hospital. His office staff is equally as good a little busy but they are very prompt getting you in an out. I have mot sat in their waitng for more than 10 minutes ever. A nice feeling from a Doctors office.
