My surgery was in January of 2003. Dr. Ver Steeg and his staff were extremely helpful pre surgery in explaining exactly what could be expected from surgery, including emphasizing all the risks involved. They not only competently aided in arranging insurance issues and pre surgery tests, etc., but insisted that I go to their support group to discuss all those issues with people who had already been through the surgery. After surgery, they have consistently been available through office visits, email, phone, and support group. Dr. Ver Steeg and his staff keep in contact, reminding me of the need for follow up lab tests and office visits. I have always felt comfortable with Dr. Ver Steeg and his staff, able to talk to them about my success and my problems. My surgery (open roux en y plus gall bladder removal) went well, but I did have post surgery bleeding issues causing a need for a brief rehospitalization and blood transfusions. Dr. Ver Steeg and his staff have always been very supportive throughout the four plus years I have been in contact with them. I think of Dr. Ver Steeg as both a gifted surgeon and a compassionate and supportive doctor. Of course, this is just MY experience.

My first impression was great. He was almost 2 hours late to the appointment but I can tell he cares about his patients. Someday it might be me that makes him late. rnrnHis staff is super nice. Phyllis answers my questions when I have them and was supportive when I was denied from the insurance and reassuring that it's just a road block, not the end. rnrnDr. Ver Steeg was very forthcoming with all of the complications and how often they have happened to him as well as what type of things he does to counteract those complications.

I have had nothing but a truly wonderfull expierience with everyone at Iowa Bariatrics. Dr. VerSteeg makes sure you fully undestand your surgery and everything that go's along with it. I was even given the chance to change my mind by his surgery team before I was taken to surgery. All my questions have always been answered, phone calls always returned. All of the office staff are truly sincere in seeing you do your best. Aftercare is stressed and how important going to support group is. His bedside manner is unlike any doctor I have ever had. He is a very caring person. I could never have put my self in better hands than Dr. VerSteeg and his team. I highly recomend them for Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Ver Steeg made me feel very comfortable on my first visit for conceltation. He has been very caring and he always calls you by your first name in and out of his office he always remembers your name and makes you feel very much at easy and you are a person to him not a case number. In my opinion Dr. Ver Steeg is the best Doctor you could ever want.
His office help is the same way very caring and always there with all the support you could ask for. Dr. Ver Steeg really encourages you to go to the support group meetings that his office conducts twice a month and they are very helpful. Dr. Ver Steeg goes through and tells you right up front what the risks of this surgery is and he does this with his seminars that him gives and again in his office at your appointment time. If I had to rate Dr. Ver Steeg I would give him 100% or a A++.
Dr. Ver Steeg is both great in surgical competence and bedside manner he is just a very caring and excellent Doctor if I had to recommend to anyone what Doctor to go to for gastric bypass I would recommend Dr. Ver Steeg. My whole experience of having gastric bypass done has been really good. The only time I really hurt was while my staples were in and once they were out if was a big relief. I started at a weight of 302 and now I am 4months and 3days out from my surgery and I am down to 234 pounds. I once in a while will have some pain near where my new tummy is and I have to stop and think what have I done that I shouldn't of done. I have experienced what they call dumping and that is the worst part of having this done . Once you experience dumping and if you try to eat something you shouldn't have ate believe me you won't want to try it again.

Dr. Ver Steeg was very nice and understanding and took the time to listen to your questions. His office staff is very nice and willing to help anyway they can. They emphasize after care a lot. If you have any questions or concerns they want to know. They are willing to take your call day or not. There is really not a structured aftercare. But they are there for ya. They talked about all the risks and concerns that go along with the surgery. I rate doctor Ver steeg a 10. I think surgical competence is very important it's your life that is on the line. But bedside manner is also important too.

I really liked him. But the after care was very limited. All questions where answered by his staff ( wife) with "it will pass"! He's no longer in this area and I have been forced to look else where for a Bariatric DR. to continue monitoring my progress. Ver Steeg office told me they would send all my records to my personal family doctor. I have now found a great caring doctor at Dakota Dunes Mid plain center. Named Dr. Rintz (sp) I felt left high and dry...... all alone in this experience.
