At doctor's office we waited 2 hours for 15 minute first visit. Had to pay receptionist $5 to get signature on work absence form. At hospital pre-op visit, they either did not have scale to weigh up to 400 lb or it was broken. So they took Heather to loading dock for weight measurement. Heather received letter for hospital company 3 weeks after her death asking why she did not follow up with social service visit. After 5 calls to their voice mail, I got call back and let them know she died. Doctor let us know there is risk with any surgery but that this was relatively safe.

I loved my surgeon. He removed my gallbladder last August and I had a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend him.

MY FIRST IMPRESSION OF DR.QUINLIN WAS VERY GOOD. HE WAS CARING AND UNDERSTANDING AND ANSWERED ALL OF MY QUESTIONS. ALL OF THE STAFF IN HIS OFFICE WERE VERY HELPFUL AND NICE. I COULD CALL THE OFFICE ANY TIME IF I THOUGHT OF ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS. DR.QUINLIN EXPLAINED THE PROCEDURE AS WELL AS THE LONG TERM AFFECTS, CHANGES, AND POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS. THE PACKET OF INFORMATION THAT I RECIEVED WAS VERY INFORMATIVE. THERE IS A LOT OF AFTERCARE WORK INVOLVED. I WOULD RATE HIM WITH GREAT EASE AN EXCELLENT. I HAD A FRIEND WHO HAD THE SURGERY WITH ANOTHER DR IN PITTSBURG AND THIS DR DID NOT GIVE HER ANY INFORMATION AT ALL. A MATTER OF FACT WHEN SHE CALLED HIM FOR THE FIRST TIME HE SCHEDULED HER FOR THE SURGERY WITHIN A FEW WEEKS. HE EXPLAINED NOTHING TO HER. A MATTER OF FACT SHE WAS TRYING TO EAT CHICKEN WINGS 4 DAYS AFTER SHE GOT HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL!!!!! I DO NOT KNOW THAT DR'S NAME BUT I AM GLAD HE IS NOT MINE. I TRUST MY LIFE WITH DR. QUINLIN!!!!!!!I RATE HIM GREAT, AND THAT IS EVEN BEFORE THE SURGERY!

I believe that Dr. Quinlan is committed to helping the morbidly obese. I asked him why he performs by-pass surgery. His answer was honest and to the point -- "I do this surgery because I have never seen any one procedure help to bring health and happiness to so many people in a short period of time."
Those considering Dr. Quinlan's services should know that he is an outstanding physician and person.
Following by-pass surgery (while I was in the recovery room), I experienced an arterial embolism in my leg. All medical staff and Dr. Quinlan were taken off guard, but immediately responded through quick diagnosis and surgical intervention. I feel it is important to share this part of my story since I was one of those person's who required and needed additional care beyond the by-pass surgery. I received that quality and coordinated care through Dr. Quinlan. He really walked beside me and made it clear that he was available day or night.

I will pursue the WLS with him as he was recommended by my family doctor as the best he knows of in Pittsburgh. Will update as time goes forward, nothing to report yet except I will be contacting his office to find out how to start the ball rolling.

I had originally picked Dr. Schauer in Pittsburgh. He is listed as accepting Health Assurance. I talked to his office and got his info packet sent to me. I filled everything out and have been waiting (just like they said) for his office to contact me for an appointment. I have still not heard from them. Thank Goodness someone saw my profile on here and emailed me. She too had wasted a bunch of time on Dr. Schauer not knowing that he is no longer a Health Assurance provider. Thanks to her I called my insurance company. I found out that although he is a listed provider, as of Jan. 1, 2001 he is no longer accepting Health Assurance. I found out though that Dr. Quinlin and his affiliated hospitals are 100% covered. I have called his office and am now eagerly awaiting my first appointment.

I found Dr. Quinlin to be very friendly and knowledgeable. He is willing to asnwer all your questions. You get an information packet prior to your surgery. His office visits are very quick and to the point.

Very professional, also easy to talk with aobut particular concerns. Staff very supprotive, took care of all insureance without any problems, approved after first request. Initial visit early July, had pre op test done week later (abd ultrasound and barium swallow), approval few weeks later, sugery done 9/25/00. Dr Quinlin was verythorough in explaining risks/benefits, and that this is major surgery and a major lifestyle change. I work in the medical field, and have come to realize that surgical competence is more important than bedside manner, but I learned this thru my professional experience--not to get turned off with an MD with less than pleasant personality. However, Dr. Quinlin provided a very nice balance of both surgical expertise and pleasant, approachable bedside manner, so it really wasnt an issue here.

I wan't quite sure how to take Dr. Q. at first, but after getting to know him better I think he is wonderful! His staff is incredibly helpful all of the time. No matter how big or small my worry was he always was kind and caring to me. TO sum it all up for you......I can't say one bad thing about Dr. Quinlin or his staff or Shadyside Hospital!!
