Dr. Appel is a very experienced surgeon. I am having a revision from a RNY and wanted someone that has much experience in doing them. Dr. A is very busy as is his staff. Do not expect to get surgery quickly as Dr. Appel and his staff are very thorough. I am trying to learn patience from this experience but I must say I know it is best to be thorough. Aftercare and the risks of surgery are very much stressed. Surgical competence is utmost in my opinion - I will have time for conversation and jokes after the surgery. Now I want the best Surgeon I can get and I think Dr. Appel is the MAN!!

July 10, 2001. I'm happy to report that all is well. I'm 11 days post-op and Dr. Appel is truly a great surgeon. He got me through the surgery and I'm on my way back to a thinner and healthier life. Thanks Dr. Appel... and staff, esp. Kathy Kemp

All is still well. I've lost from 270 down to 135. It's like a new world for me. I don't recall ever being at this weight, even as a child.

Dr. Appel is a tiny man in stature, but his is striaight up and to hte point. He made a comment to our group that made perfect sense.
He said if we were doing what we were supposed to be doing, we would not be in his office looking into wls. I want a dr. who is going to be straight up and honest with me.

I have heard nothing but the best from his post-op patients, I know that I will be in great hands.

His program manager Kathy Kemp and her assistant April are very nice and helpful, they work with you and will let you know before hand what they require in order to get insurance approval for surgery. THey were both very informative.

I think Dr. Appel is great. I have read alot of negative things about his bedside manner. I don't see it. He is funny in his own way you just have to understand his sense of humor. Dr. Appel is a very busy man and one of the top 50 surg. in the US. Kathy and April his program managers are great. They let you know things as soon as they do. We all can get very impatient in this process, but believe me they are doing all they can for each patient. They are both very busy ladies and I don't envy their job. They do a great job. Dr. Appel is straight forward and will explain the procedure completely and answer any questions. Aftercare is very important to Dr. Appel and his staff and it is structured. I would rate Dr. Appel and his staff at a 10. It may take awhile, but in the end it is all worth it.

No bed side manner. Very abrupt and rude.

I believe he really cares. He has been just as
excited for me as my family quick to encourage and
to admonish when needed.

Very helpful and interested whenever I am there.
Phone calls have always been returned promptly.

At first his manner and attitude but now I know
differently.

He does emphasize diet , vitamins, supplements
and exercise and checks up on those issues regularly.

Yes in some ways. As far as keeping track of supplements
vitamins, supplements your blood levels etc...

I think he is wonderful and would reccomend him.
In fact He also preformed my skin removal.

Surgical competence is excellent. His beside manner...
well, he is very demanding and exacting of your care
and the care you receive in the hopsital. He drives
the nurses crazy demanding the best but... you really
have to not let his abrputness get to you.

I had a group intro meeting with Dr. Appel. It was very informative for the people attending. I have heard nothing but the best about Dr. Appel. I'm looking forward to the upcoming process.

Dr. Appel's office staff Kim & April have been great! They are really busy but if you leave a message they will return your call.

I am fortunate to have selected Dr. Appel as my surgeon. From all I've heard - - and experienced, he's a competent and dedicated physician. Who the hell cares about "bedside manner" when there are many more important things about which to be concerned? Personally, I rather appreciated Dr. Appel's dry wit - - and found him to be quite engaging.

I am also appreciative of the attention Kathy (SWM Program Coordinator) has given me; her patience and humor have been welcome blessings. Also, WELCOME to April, new SWM Program Coordinator for this Practice!

I WENT FOR A GROUP CONSULTATION ABOUT 5 WEEKS AGO. WE FIRST MET KATHY KEMP, SHE ANSWERED ALL OF OUR QUESTIONS AND WAS VERY FRIENDLY. DR. APPEL EXPLAINED THE SURGERY AND ANSWERED ALL OF OUR QUESTIONS. I WAS ALITTLE DISSAPPOINTED THAT WE DID NOT HAVE A ONE ON ONE, BUT AT LEAST I WAS ABLE TO HAVE THE QUESTIONS ANSWERED. I HAD MY STOMACH STAPLED IN 1984 SO I HAD ASKED THE DIFFRENCE AND IF IT WERE POSSIBLE THAT THIS WOULD WORK BEING THAT I WAS UNSUCCESSFUL WITH THE FIRST ONE, AND DR. APPEL SAYS THAT HE HAS PREFORMED MANY RETAKES AND HAS HAD SUCCESS. AFTER THE MEETING KATHY OFFERED TO GIVE ME INFORMATION ON A LADY WOULD JUST HAD A RETAKE, I SPOKE WITH HER AND SHE IS DOING GREAT LOST 148 ILBS SO FAR AND HAD SURGEY 1 YEAR AGO. SO NOW I WILL WAIT AND SEE IF I AM APPROVED TO HAVE THE SURGERY.

I HAVE A SURGERY DATE JANUARY 31, 2002 AT 8:00 AM. DEKALB MEDICAL CENTER
IT TOOK 11 WEEKS FROM CONSENT FORM SIGNING TO GET A DATE. THERE WAS A CANCELLATION AND I WAS NEXT TO CALL ON THE LIST.
Not a man of alot of words, but in my opinion a brialliant surgeon. He Got me through surgery with flying colors. No complications. Surgery took 3 hours. He is a little gruff and to the point. But I wanted a great surgeon not a best friend from him. I would highly recommend him to anyone. Warning though, it is not the fastest office to work with. It will take at least 3-6 months to get your surgery date scheduled.
