Rancocas Valley Hospital Hospital

THE SAME DAY SURGERY CENTER AND THE OR WERE WONDERFUL. ONCE I LEFT THE RECOVERY ROOM AND WENT TO THE 4 TH FLOOR IT WAS JUST A NIGHTMARE. THE NURSING STAFF WAS JUST ABOUT NON EXSISTANT. mY BOYFRIEND TOOK CARE OF MYSELF AND THE ELDERLY WOMEN IN THE NEXT BED.ONE AND A HALF HOURS OF RINGING FOR A NURSE BEFORE ANYONE CAME IN. i WILL NEVER BE IN THIS HOSPITAL AGAIN

I was shocked during my stay. Like most hospitals, the ICU unit was staffed with caring, patient-centered nurses, nurses aides, etc. I expected to have less attention when I was moved to a regular room. What I did NOT expect was several nurses and nurses' aides ignoring my own and other patients' requests, endless beeping of nursing call buttons that were never responded too, patients actually screaming for help while the staff was sitting in the nurses station eating PIZZA at the same time, the head of the nursing staff on the 4th floor sleeping at the desk when I had to leave the room myself to get help for my roommate, etc. I could go on and on. I was appalled at the disorganization of the nursing staff, their lack of effort, and lack of professionalism. I was left by a nurses aide naked in the bathroom standing for 25 minutes or more. I needed help and never received it. I couldn't get my gown back on with all of the equipment, my pain, etc...she told me to hit the button and she'd be back. Mind you that she was one of the ones sitting having pizza in the middle of the floor. I was also given improper bariatric diet foods withs sugar...and was given milk which is not a clear liquid or a good idea to have as the first liquid after surgery.
If you have to go there, heed my warnings and be prepared to check on the food you receive, voice your concerns, and be ready for anything.

The whole process from admission to discharge was as pleasant as a hospital stay can be. (my opinion!)
The facilities were clean & easy to use. The nursing staff was superb!! The support staff was superb. One of their main concerns is your (the patient) level of pain/comfort. This was a constant question. If I had to choose a hospital, it would be this one. I felt safe & comfortable there.

The nurses were excellent in surgery and ICU, attentive, caring, and gentle. However, when I was transfered out of ICU and to the general ward for the last 2 days of my 4 day stay, the attention took a DRASTIC downward turn! I had to get out of bed to ask for my pain meds (other than the morphine IV pump I always had with me). I felt like a number down there and not a person. It was very hard emotionally to hold it together after having received such wonderful treatment up in ICU. It was like being thrust from Eden and not know what you did because you certainly couldn't have eaten anything!
Also, the trays that were brought to me for the "clear liquid" portion of my diet weren't suited for gastric bypass patients. They brought fully-loaded sugar Luigi's Italian Ice, regular jello, and caffeinated tea. I didn't touch any of these, but asked for a cup of decaf tea to go along with my broth. I have called the hospital about this, but I don't know if it will do much good.
Still, my complaints were fairly minor and my overall experience was a good one. I would not hesitate to use this hospital again.
