That is one the the cruelest stories I've read. ? I hope United gets a lot of hate for that. If there was two open seats then there should be no excuse why he couldn't remain on the plane. That man and that flight attendant should be disgusted with themselves and I'm sure they aren't. What a sad story.

I don't know about this. I feel for both sides. It is humiliating that the overweight man was asked to leave the plane but if I was the other passenger I would be upset if I was going to be squished on a 5 hour long flight.  The 385lb should have bought 2 seats, that way he could flow into the next seat with no issues. I have always done that or bought first class tickets to prevent this very issue.

It is rough... I got to the point where I just ponied up and bought 2 seats... better to be safe than humiliated. Made for really nice travel actually. As close to first class as I'll ever get.

Southwest is actually the best, if the plane isn't full, you call them and they refund the second ticket. And because of their crazy no assigned seats, you get to board first. When you get to the gate you go to the desk and get one of those blue boarding passes...

I feel for both sides, but airlines can be brutal. My niece was flying to see us with her son who was 18 months at the time. The rest of her row was empty and the flight attendant wouldn't allow him to sit on the seat beside her, because she didn't pay for it.

It seems as though the complainer could have moved to 2 -together -but - empty seats, however, he refused and caused the drama and delay.  Karma bites, so can't image what crap is in store for him.

I wouldn't want to sit next to a 385lb man either, or swap my window or aisle seat for one in the middle of a row.

Being morbidly obese is not a special class on a plane and we all have to take responsibility for ourselves - he should have bought two seats!   I don't think the complainer or airline did anything wrong.

O.M.G. This makes me want to cry. This is why obese people become shut ins and it becomes a vicious circle of being and obese and that can make it hard to lose weight - why would you want to leave the house when this is what happens?

Yes, I realize the obese person is at fault for being obese but holy ****I don't even know how to express my feelings on this articulately.

I also agree with the airline's policy. When I was 339 pounds and flew, I sat by the window and my daughter sat in the middle seat so I did not affect anyone else. We do not have the right to infringe on other people's space.

"To better ensure the comfort of all customers, United requires that customers purchase a second seat if they can't sit with both armrests lowered and without encroaching on the seats of their fellow passengers. The customer had not previously purchased a second seat and there were not two available seats together on the flight."
