I know goal weight depends on different things...I am 46  I was always small framed..5 foot tall..or short  LOL

My weight in my 20's was like 110......My sister who is 52 has has RNY, she weighs about 125....now my doctor thinks my goal should be 140.....Im just curious because I know this is more about HEALTH than a number on a scale...

I think your goal weight should be where ever you feel best.  A weight that you can maintain realistically and be able to eat in a way that you can live with long term.

Most people who lose a lot of weight rapidly experience a period where they look unhealthy and gaunt and drawn, even if they are far from underweight.  You will probably start hearing people tell you to stop losing.

Just hang in there because eventually the weight will redistribute and you will look healthier.  I've seen a lot of people hear that they look too thin so they stop losing and then when the almost inevitable bounce back happen they aren't happy where they land.

Don't let anyone (other then your doctor) dictate what you should weigh.  And even doctors tend to be a bit conservative when it comes to giving goal weights.

My doctor was definitely conservative with my goal.  I started my process at 350 lbs, and he set my goal at 250.  There's no doubt in my mind I'm blowing past that.

At 250 lbs, I'll still be considered "obese" by BMI.  I set my own goal at 230 lbs, but even that may be high.

My doctor's goal was 250 also, and my own was 225. I'm at 185, right in the middle of the healthy BMI range.

6'3" tall, male.

Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

Your body will stop when it's ready so just stick to your plan and you will get there!  140 seems reasonable  and very achievable for a 5ft frame.  Set that as your goal and then if you want to - blow by it and settle where you are happy.  IMO it's better to set goals that you can achieve and then decide where you want to go from there.  I am 5'4" and my personal goal was 145 (24.9 BMI for barely normal weight) and frankly at the outset I was thinking just under 150lb and I will be thrilled.  Then I decided that 135 would be better and give me wiggle room and then I just stopped at 130lb for a while.  After my TT and some complications I've dropped down to 120lb - which is a bit too tiny but I've got plenty of wiggle to go up now and I'm glad for it.

Good luck - this is the fun part!

My regular doctor gave me a goal weight of 170 using the BMI chart; the WLS staff gave none.   The BMI chart considers "normal" somewhere between 19-25.   FYI:  there is a BMI calculator on this website under the heading "RESOURCES."

I am 55 and 5'6.5". My original goal set by me was 160 but when I got there quickly I lowered it to 145 which was the high end of a normal bmi. My body liked about 120 and that is where I ended up. I have been between 119-123 for about 21 months now and my rheumatoid arthritis is so much better now! Your body will help you figure it out and stop when ready. I think most surgeons are conservative on goial weights because they want patients to be successful.

I looked up the healthy weight range for my height and then picked a number right in the middle :)

My surgeon never gave me a goal weight.  Even when I asked I was told, "We don't do that.  You will have surgery and if you follow our nutrition and exercise plans everything will settle exactly where it should."

Undeterred, I pointed out that for them to do any calculation on my excess weight they must be drawing a line in the sand somewhere.  They finally revealed that for their internal calculations they picked the weight right in the middle of the healthy range for my sex and height.

But I really admired their philosophy of not letting something like a goal number be our measurement of success.

I'm 5'!  I chose 150 as my goal weight, then 145.  I'm now sitting at 140 (happily.) Although, I am considered overweight on the bmi chart, I like how I look and feel great!  I'm letting my tool do the work and sticking to my plan.  As I told the dietician when I chose 145, I wanted to chose a number that was attainable and more importantly MAINTAINABLE.

Choose a goal weight that is attainable, then change it, if you want when you're closer to that number.
