Why RNY and not sleeve?

I started this process and completed all requirements and all I needed to do was schedule a surgery date......five years ago! At the time, I would have had the RNY because my insurance wouldn't pay for the sleeve; I wanted the sleeve so I didn't go through with the surgery.

I have one more nutrition class and now, I am not sure if I want the sleeve or the RNY. My surgeon recommends the RNY, my PCP says Sleeve.....

How did you all decide? Ever wished you opted for the sleeve??

Thanks for any input, I appreciate it!

And I searched for this topic and no results??

I had a raging case of Type 2 Diabetes, and RNY is better for helping with that.  My diabetes is now in remission and I don't have to take any medication for it.

I am pre-diabetic and take Metformin. The highest it has ever gotten is 148, after eating.

I also have high cholesterol and hypertension.

The more weight I gain is causing everything to elevate.

Thanks for your reply!

No I never wish I opted for the sleeve. My real life person I know who had sleeve didn't lose well with it- so that made me leery of it. Then, while complications are common with either- reflux seems to happen far more commonly with the sleeve.

I figured dual action of malabsorption/restriction was what would work best for the amount I needed to loose.

Type 2 diabetic. I wanted the best method to help me resolve or control it. I was taking 4 medications to help control it. Today I'm not taking anything.

I too was type 2 diabetic on metformin and had high cholesterol and triglycerides and uncontrolled high blood pressure on three pills. I had been overweight or obese my whole life even as a child. I went from a high weight of 275 to 118 to 120 where I have been for 31/2 years. Blood sugars, cholesterol and triglycerides and blood pressure are now normal. Never sorry I had the RNY and before and after pics to follow.

I had GERD and didn't want to risk it getting worse.  Plus, there's a lot more long-term data on the RNY

I was at a point in my life where I had faithfully gone on restriction only diets- would lose 10lbs and that was it. I was afraid a restriction only procedure, wouldn't be enough. I wanted the advantage of malabsorption to get me on my way. I have no regrets over my decision.

I was afraid of GERD. Had it with the band and it was hell. My surgeon actually wanted the sleeve for me, but left it up to me.
