Before & After RNY Gastric Bypass with Danie11e

November 1, 2016

Celebrating Danie11e's Before & After RNY Gastric Bypass Success!

For as long as I can remember I have been overweight. One of my earliest memories of my weight problem goes as far back as my elementary school gym class. We were weighed in class and I remember the comment my teacher made about how heavy I was. As a teenager and young adult, I was always trying the latest fad diet and was successful in the short term but the weight never stayed off for long. Inevitably, I would gain back all the weight I lost, plus some.

When I was pregnant with my first son, I gained a significant amount of weight, and could only manage to lose about a quarter of the weight. My weight continued to fluctuate within 50 pounds but never reached a healthy weight. In fact, I probably never was a weight that was not considered obese.

During my second pregnancy, I gained even more weight and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. With a family history of diabetes, I knew it would not be long before I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes if I kept up my current lifestyle. I was out of breath, unhealthy, tired, and most importantly, I could not keep up with my young children. I was left on the sidelines to watch my husband have all the fun, and that was not a place I wanted to be.

I was very inspired by my Mom who had the Gastric Sleeve performed in May of 2012. She has had a great weight loss journey over the last three years. Not only did I see the incredible transformation she made, it also made me realize that this in no way was the “easy way out”. I decided I wanted to regain my life back, like she had, and started looking into bariatric surgery.

Total Weight Loss: 151 lbs

At 330 pounds, and with the support of my wonderful husband and family, it was not long before I was walking into the bariatric surgery seminar. I have never looked back having RNY Gastric Bypass surgery. My only regret is that I did not do this sooner!

Special Milestones/NSVs

I have had many non-scale victories over the last year. From being able to ride roller coasters again to finally being able to wear a pair of jeans I have held on to for 10 years because “one day they would fit”. Nothing is more exciting than it finally being true - they fit!

Recently my family went on a Caribbean cruise that was full of non-scale victories. I felt comfortable wearing a bathing suit at the beach, we zip-lined, and averaged 18,000+ steps a day. I had no problem keeping up with my kids! My husband and I also celebrated our anniversary by booking a kayak/hike/snorkel day trip on one of the islands.

None of this would have been possible at 330 pounds and I am infinitely thankful for my weight loss tool!

How has ObesityHelp.com been a part of your journey?

ObesityHelp.com has been an invaluable resource in my weight loss journey. In-person support groups are only offered two days a month through the hospital where I had my surgery. With trying to balance my family, career, and life in general, I cannot always attend. I have found participating in the OH forums is very helpful. The comradery, advice, support, and even tough love given on the RNY forum is awesome. One of my favorite daily posts is the “What’s On Your Menu, RNY’ers?”It not only gives me lots of great food options and ideas, it is also is a genuinely caring community. Reading the questions others posts, and the responses I receive on my own posts, helps me remember that I am not alone in this journey.
