Making Breakfast a Priority

by Kent Sasse, MD, MPH, FACS, FACRS

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” While commonly quoted, this advice is not as commonly taken.

Starting your day with one healthy decision supports more healthy decisions throughout the day. This is one important reason to begin the day with breakfast. Yes, there are literally a hundred reasons why most of us are skipping breakfast including; not being hungry, not having the time, believing coffee is breakfast, or even the thought that we’ve somehow outgrown the need for breakfast.  I realize that if breakfast is not convenient or fast, it will be difficult for many adults to make time for.

Eating breakfast is a daily habit that has to be created for both successful weight loss and ongoing weight maintenance.  It’s important to note that all breakfast is not created equally. I strongly support protein for breakfast for a couple reasons:

  1. Weight management- increases metabolism.
  2. Feel more satiety over the course of the day, leading to eating fewer calories the rest of the day.

Great sources of protein include the many possibilities of eggs (huevos rancheros, casseroles, scrambled), fruit parfait with Greek yogurt, fruit and nuts, and protein shakes and bars.

Breakfast, it’s not just for kids anymore, so get you and your family started today with a new habit.
