Sun, Sand, & Support in Newport Beach

The Bariatric Connect conference venue is conveniently located near several iconic attractions and is the perfect base for exploration. So you may want to consider staying a few extra days to experience the quintessential Southern California getaway! After all, what's a visit to beautiful California without enjoying the sun, sand, surf, and world-famous destinations?

LOCAL ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS

After two full days of fun, education, and support, enjoy the local activities and attractions, including:

  • Disneyland®
  • Catalina Island
  • Knott's Berry Farm
  • Fashion Island
  • Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve
  • Newport Beach Vineyards and Winery
  • Balboa Fun Zone

No Southern California trip is complete for me without a trip to Disneyland and Downtown Disney (DD). It's so close that it's a "must-do". Yes, it's spendy! But if you are already paying for airfare, why not add some time to your visit and maximize travel? Even a trip to Downtown Disney for a nice meal & some retail moments can be fantastic! No theme park ticket is required to stroll through DD. You can walk to and through the hotels, eat at any of their casual and/or fine dining spots, and experience the "Disney Difference" that makes them all so fun to spend time in! And at the time of the conference, they'll have the Halloween/Fall season decor up, so there's lots to see! If lucky, you may even catch musical performances in The Grand Californian or the DD staging entertainment area. With so much new stuff coming in Fall '24, it'll be a new adventure even for seasoned Disney travelers like me, I highly recommend it!

COASTAL BEAUTY

Sink your toes into the sandy beaches, bask in the warm sunshine, and unwind amidst the coastal beauty:

  • Embark on a thrilling Whale and Dolphin excursion
  • Cruise the waters on a Balboa Island Boat Tour to glimpse celebrity homes
  • Explore more than eight miles of Newport Beach coastline extending from the Santa Ana River jetty to Crystal Cove State Park, and fringed by the scenic Newport Bay
  • Take in the sun, sand, and breathtaking view of the gorgeous cliffs at Corona Del Mar State Beach Park
  • Peruse local shops with unique treasures and gifts

You can get a Catalina Flyer ferry from Newport to Avalon if you have an extra day. Also, you can rent Duffy Electric Boats and drive them yourself around Balboa Island, it's super fun!

MORE TO EXPLORE - A SHORT DRIVE AWAY

And that's not all! You can venture beyond Newport Beach to discover renowned destinations that are just a short drive away, such as:

  • Universal Studios
  • Warner Brothers Studios
  • The Getty Museum
  • Griffith Observatory
  • Hollywood
  • TCL Chinese Theatre
  • Venice Beach Boardwalk
  • Hollywood Walk of Fame
  • Rodeo Drive
  • Santa Monica Pier

I love it when the conferences are held in California. I always stay an extra few days to go have some fun. I like going to Universal Studios Citywalk. There's so much to do there! You won't get bored with all the entertainment, restaurants, and shops there. And I love comedy and improv, so Los Angeles is a must-do for me. Especially the Comedy Store. Oh, and Venice Beach is always quite an experience.

As a new post-op, I went to Disney after the conference. It was helpful to go with people who understood my fears about fitting on rides, who paused with me if I needed to, who understood the importance of getting in protein. I didn't have to explain, they got me! Give yourself extra time - whether it is an adventure or splitting a meal together at the hotel - be willing to put yourself out there to create a support system. It makes all the difference!
