Gastroscopy after RNY
Hi all,
So the local surgeon here has decided to take out my gall bladder. Not because my WLS surgeon suggested it, but because he did a hida scan and found that my gall bladder is not working at all. He can't guarantee that the discomfort I feel now will be resolved as my discomfort is not typical to what people feel when they have gall bladder issues. However my WLS surgeon is sure that I will find relief after having my gall bladder removed.
Anyway the surgeon is also going to be looking to see if I have a hernia when he does the surgery, and if he finds one he will repair it. He has ordered that I have a gastroscopy before my surgery though, and I'm not really sure what the purpose is. I didn't get a chance to ask him because he didn't tell me about it at my appt, but his secretary called me to book it.
Besides my little bit of fear of having the scope at all, I'm a little scared to have a scope done since having surgery because I'm afraid that he will go too far down by accident and poke something he shouldn't. That probably sounds stupid, he does know I had an RNY and he is very informative and seems like he really knows what he is talking about. But I still have that fear.
Has anyone else had a scope done after having WLS? Is there something I should be careful of? Anything I should go in knowing or questions I should ask or instructions I should give?
Thanks for your help.

I had one after my gallbladder surgery because I was still having pain issues (turns out one of the stones fell out of the gallbladder while it was being removed and got stuck in my bile duct). Anyway..... the endoscopy Dr. was fully aware that I had had RNY and was convinced that he would be able to see what he needed to see with regard to that pesky little stone - I strongly disagreed with him but hey, go for it. The endoscopy was fine - and I was right, he couldn't see what he thought he'd be able to see. lol

I haven't had one yet but I am booked for an Endoscopy and Colonoscopy on June 13. I am worried about the Endoscopy because I am a gagger but have been told they will take care of that. Other then that I will just make sure that every person I come across on that day is aware that I have had RNY. The scope has a camera attached so they will be able to see as they go down.

Thanks for the replies. Karen, the doctors should know by now to listen to what you say! LOL! I hope it all worked out in the end.
I am a little worried about the discomfort / gag issue with having the scope, but am putting my trust into them since they do this all the time. She says they'll give me something to "relax" me, but didn't say how strong that would be. She didn't instruct me to have someone there to drive me home afterwards, but I will anyway just in case. And I also want Jim there for support and comfort too so...
Anyway, I'm sure it will all go well. I just wanted to hear other people's experiences. Thanks again!
